In the fourth quarter of 2017, Twitter made a net profit of $91.1 million against the loss of $167.1 million for the same period, one year ago. Does Twitter Really Reflect The World’s Emotion?

Twitter is an unreliable witness to the world's emotions, and assuming that the micro-blogging site accurately reflects real life may be risky, scientists say. With over 300 million monthly active users around the globe sharing their thoughts in 140 characters or less, studies based on Twitter data are "particularly alluring" to researchers and the media, said sociology expert Eric Jensen, from the University of Warwick in the UK. However, he cautions against this "big data gold rush," pointing out that there is no evidence that social media content shared on Twitter is a truthful reflection of how its users feel. Twitter users have developed their own unique cultural behaviour, conversations and identities, which shape the ways in which they present their views online. Social ...

First Time Facebook To Build Houses in Silicon Valley

The shortage of housing in California's Silicon Valley has gotten so severe that Facebook Inc on Friday proposed taking homebuilding into its own hands for the first time with a plan to construct 1,500 units near its headquarters. The growth of Facebook, Alphabet Inc's Google and other tech companies has strained neighborhoods in the San Francisco Bay area that were not prepared for an influx of tens of thousands of workers during the past decade. Home prices and commute times have risen. Tech companies have responded with measures such as internet-equipped buses for employees with long commutes. Facebook has offered at least $10,000 in incentives to workers who move closer to its offices. Those steps, though, have not reduced complaints that tech companies are making communities ...

Instagram Stories Overtakes Snapchat to Hit 200M Daily Active Users

Facebook-owned Instagram has claimed that more than 200 million people a day use its Stories feature, which competes against Snapchat. Snapchat had 161 million daily active users at the end of last year, ahead of Snap's March initial public offer, which was the largest by a technology firm in three years despite decelerating user growth.
