Online Insurance Startup Acko raises $12 Mn from Amazon

Acko Technology, an online insurance startup raised $12 million in a fresh round led by e-commerce giant Amazon India as informed by the company on Sunday. The funding round witnessed participation from new investor Ashish Dhawan and existing investor Catamaran Ventures (Owned by Narayana Murthy). The new infusion has taken Acko's total equity funding to about $42 million with its valuation at about $100 million. The round led by Amazon marks company debut in the financial sector where it will now co-create products with the insurance tech startup - besides being its distributor. E-commerce giant, Amazon has come up with a lite web browser app for India to attract emerging markets which is claimed to be "lighter than competition". Called "Internet: fast, lite and private", the app has been specifically designed to consume less space on devices and comes under 2 MB in size. The app is visible at Google play store but currently downloadable only in selected smartphone brands in India. Online marketplace Amazon India has secured a licence to operate pre-paid payment instrument (PPI) or mobile wallet in the country as it tries to compete more aggressively against rivals Snapdeal and Paytm. The approval will help the US-based giant to cash in on the booming digital payments market in India. "We are pleased to receive our PPI license from the RBI (Reserve Bank of India).
