Online takeaway delivery firm Foodpanda is acquiring the Hong Kong assets of U.S.-based Delivery.com as it consolidates its position in key markets while shedding assets elsewhere. Founded in 2012, Berlin-based Foodpanda expanded rapidly worldwide through nine acquisitions fuelled by $310 million in capital it raised in six tranches, as online takeaway food startups enjoyed a frenzy of funding. Foodpanda, which is 49 percent owned by German emerging market e-commerce investor Rocket Internet, was active in up to 40 markets a year ago but has pared this back to focus on 24 markets in Asia, Eastern Europe, and the Middle East. The Labour Ministry has decided to integrate the registration process under five Labour Acts with the e-biz portal of the Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion (DIPP). Domestic feature phone brand Advantage Computers' (Adcom) has said it may consider a legal action against Ringing Bells, the Noida-based start-up, which claimed to manufacture the world's cheapest smartphone. Adcom founder and chairman Sanjeev Bhatia said the manufacturer of Rs. 251 (less than USD 4) smartphone, distributed the Adcom handsets to the media during the launch last month. "We are deeply grieved by this incident where our mobile phone has been presented to masses for Rs.251, and therefore, would not hesitate from taking any legal actions against the company, in case the entire fiasco impacts Adcom's brand name or subsequently we face any other kind of losses," Bhatia said in a statement. IT, Start-ups Get Less Attention in Budget 2016: Nasscom

The union budget for 2016-17 was a mixed bag for the Indian IT industry and start-ups, which witnessed very few proposals with caveats, the industry’s apex body Nasscom said. “The budget is a mixed for the technology and services sector, as clarification and simplification boost business and more technology adoption in governance is a step in right direction,” Nasscom said in a statement. “In the backdrop of global economic volatility, there are unmet expectations on policy announcements that enable ease of doing business for our sector.
