Google invests $4.5 billion for 7.7% stake in Jio platforms

Mumbai 15th July 2020: Google acquired a 7.7 percent stake of India's leading online company Jio platforms for $4.5 billion, adding to a series of large U.S. investments into an India based online venture that has nearly 400 million users in India. The global search leader is acquiring 7.7% of the fast-growing internet unit for 337.4 billion rupees, Reliance Chairman Mukesh Ambani said in a Reliance AGM event. According to a report by a leading domain service provider, the first quarter of 2019 closed with 351.8 million domain name registrations across all domain service providers. The growth of 3.1 million domain name registrations or 0.9 percent, compared to the fourth quarter of 2018. Domain name registrations have grown by 18.0 million, or 5.4 percent, year over year. The commercial roll out of the project comes a year after Facebook pulled the plug on the controversial Free Basics programme that drew severe criticism from advocates of net neutrality. The government is working on exclusive framework on data protection to strengthen privacy provisions and check misuse of personal information, a top official said. IT Secretary Aruna Sundararajan said that the government has "already taken cognisance of the fact that data is being put out indiscriminately in certain cases". She said that the IT ministry is working on exclusive framework of privacy rules which will be soon placed in public domain for consultation.
