Google.org Offers $8.4M Grants to 4 Indian NGOs

Google.org, the philanthropic arm of Google, today announced grants of $8.4 million to four NGOs in India that offer technology-based learning solutions. The NGOs include Pratham Books StoryWeaver ($3.6 million), Pratham Education Foundation ($3.1 million), Million Sparks Foundation ($1.2 million) and Learning Equality ($500,000). They will receive the grant for two years to expand and scale the work they are doing. These grants are part of a global $50 million commitment that Google.org has made towards supporting non-profit entities that are building tech-based learning solutions. An Education Firm Eruditus Raises $8 Million From Bertelsmann India Investments

Eruditus Executive Education today said it has raised USD 8 million (Rs 52.36 crore) in its series B round from Bertelsmann India Investments. The company plans to use the funding to add new programmes with existing and new university partners as well as expand its geographical footprint to China, Latin America and Europe, the executive education programmes provider said in a release. Samsung Sets up “Smart Class” in 373 Navodaya Schools

Samsung India said today it has set up "smart class" in 373 Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas in different parts of the country since 2013, allowing more than two lakh students access to easy and digitally interactive learning opportunities. In this period, over 7,400 teachers have been trained on how to use interactive technology to teach, the Korean electronics major said in a statement here. Banaras Hindu University students have launched a new campaign to encourage people to adopt digital payment methods inside the campus, with the varsity administration installing PoS machines at its hospitals here. The Mera Mobile Mera Batua drive by the students was launched yesterday, a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged people here to shift toward electronic payment methods. BHU administration has initiated actions to install Point of Sale (PoS) machines at its 15 registration counters to receive money from patients. IFC, a member of the World Bank Group, today said it has invested $15 million in online education startup BYJU's. This partnership will enable BYJU's to further their plans to make quality education accessible for students across the nation as well as in international markets, International Finance Corporation (IFC) said in a statement. 20000 Crore Alloted For R&D at IITs, IIMs and Other Higher Education

In a bid to boost innovation at premier institutions, an agency will soon be set by the government to provide funds up to Rs 20,000 crore for building research-oriented infrastructure at IITs, IIMs and other centres of higher education. The HRD Ministrys proposal to this effect was cleared at a meeting of the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi today. Announcing the decision, HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar said a Higher Education Financing Agency (HEFA) would be jointly promoted by an identified promoter and his ministry with an authorised capital of Rs 2,000 crore of which government equity would be Rs 1,000 crore. Online education start-up BYJUs has raised USD 50 million (about USD 332.3 crore) from a clutch of investors, led by Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI) and Sequoia Capital. Other participants in the series D funding included Sofina, Lightspeed Ventures and Times Internet Ltd. The new round, which comes within months of a USD 75 million fund raise from Sequoia Capital and Sofina, will be deployed to fuel international expansion in countries like the US and the UK.
