How Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Jio Fooled us in the Name of Cheaper Data

Disclaimer:  We got this brilliant analytical piece about newly launched Reliance Jio scheme (of almost free data) from WhatsApp. We are publishing it because it shows the other side – which is obviously not so good - of the so called revolutionary idea, to promote awareness.  In the name of fulfilling PM Modi’s dream for Digital India, Reliance used his image in its full page advertisement but the question remains unanswered. How will it help India to be more Digital ? Did Reliance Jio make false promises to make profit? Is Reliance Making the hay while sun is shining? We would like to know the name of the author. If any one can send us, that will be a great help.  I must admit that I was euphoric over the Reliance Jio launch. Also, thanks to the media hype, I initially b...

Payments Banks Do Not Have a Viable Business Model: SBI Chief

Small and payments banks have not yet devised a business model which can be termed viable, SBI Chairperson Arundhati Bhattacharya said today. "Neither the payments banks nor small finance banks seem to have as yet devised a business model that can be said as viable," said Bhattacharya, whose bank has tied up with Reliance Industries for a payments bank venture. Addressing a banking seminar organised by industry lobby IMC here, she added, "...a mobile banking customer, who is also a customer for payment services, will be less free to migrate to a competition for mobile services. Hence, it is hard to see payment banks taking away customers or income from commercial banks in a big way. Similar arguments hold for small finance banks. "Admitting that the entry of other non-banking co...

Why these big Corporates like Reliance, Tata, Birla showing interest in startups now

One of Reliance Industries' offices in suburban Mumbai became unusually busy last week. The Reason: a second batch of 10 startups joined the country's largest private firm's four-month acceleration programme, run in partnership with Microsoft Ventures, to help them scale up operations through mentoring and infrastructure support in exchange of technology and ideas. A month ago, a similar initiative was launched by Aditya Birla Group, albeit at a smaller scale. Big Indian family business houses, some of which were still debating whether it's worth foraying into the digital space till about a year ago, are now busy chalking out and implementing strategies to join the digital economy and get leverage from the ongoing startup boom. If you look at the history of conglomerates in the last ...
