Do You Google Everything? That May Be Risky For Your Health

Using Google frequently to search for information, rather than using our brains, may increase the risk of dementia, a UK researcher has warned. The researcher has described the practice as an "experiment" we are conducting on ourselves. "It's important to promote good brain health and to do that is to use it, but these days we seem to outsource our brain to the internet," said Frank Gunn-Moore, from the University of St Andrews in the UK. "If we want to know something, we look it up online rather than trying to recall the information from our memory," Gunn-Moore was quoted as saying to The Sunday Post. "It's an experiment the human race is running and we will have to wait and see if this outsourcing affects dementia prevalence," he said. Gun-Moore will be speaking at the annual ...

YouTube Sharpens How It Recommends Videos Despite Fears Of Isolating Users

Google’s YouTube has updated its recommendation feature to spotlight videos users are likely to find the most gratifying, brushing aside concerns that such an approach can trap people in bubbles of misinformation and like-minded opinions. The new feature, which arrived in January but has not previously been reported, uses a measure of satisfaction derived from a massive and ongoing user survey to predict and promote videos that people would rank as among the best they have watched recently. The goal is to prevent the negative sentiments that can arise when people watch hours and hours of uninspired programs, said Jim McFadden and Cristos Goodrow, who work on recommendation technology at YouTube, which is part of Alphabet Inc. But the change comes at a time when YouTube and other social m...

High-Speed Quantum Encryption Could Stop Hackers: Study

To fight back against the common security attacks, scientists have created a high-speed encryption system to stop hackers. The system is capable of distributing encryption codes at megabit-per-second rates, five to 10 times faster than existing methods and on par with current internet speeds when running several systems in parallel. In a study, published in the journal Science Advances, the researchers demonstrate that the technique is secure from common attacks, even in the face of equipment flaws that could open up leaks. "We are now likely to have a functioning quantum computer that might be able to start breaking the existing cryptographic codes in the near future," said Daniel Gauthier, from The Ohio State University in the US. "We really need to be thinking hard now of diff...

YouTube Steps Up Takedowns As Concerns About Kids’ Videos Grow

YouTube stepped up enforcement of its guidelines for videos aimed at children, the unit of Alphabet Inc’s Google said on Wednesday, responding to criticism that it has failed to protect children from adult content. The streaming video service removed more than 50 user channels in the last week and stopped running ads on over 3.5 million videos since June, YouTube vice president Johanna Wright wrote in a blog post.  “Across the board we have scaled up resources to ensure that thousands of people are working around the clock to monitor, review and make the right decisions across our ads and content policies,” Wright said. “These latest enforcement changes will take shape over the weeks and months ahead as we work to tackle this evolving challenge.” YouTube has become one of Google...

Google Will Track Your Location Even When You Turn It Off!

We realize that sometimes Android phones track our location to help us book an Uber or provide a better route on maps. But when we don't require GPS we turn location sharing off and think now we're off the grid! Well! That's where you're wrong! Google recently admitted that it is tracking its users even when they turn "location services" off. Or hey! even when they are not using any SIM Card. Can you believe that? Well, that's how they do it. How do they do it! Since the beginning of 2017, Android phones are collecting the addresses of nearby cellular towers, even when we disable the location services. The data hence collected, is sent back to the Google in an encrypted form. With this data, Google has access to all their users' location movements, place where they've been at, w...

With this release, Mozilla has set aside his deal with Yahoo that he made in 2014, to make it the default search engine provider for users in US, with others as options. With this not being the only noticeable change, Firefox has now started to keep in mind user's interests, which it seemed to have forgotten long ago about. “We looked at real world hardware to make Firefox look great on any display, and we made sure that Firefox looks an...
