SCOOT, San Francisco Based Electric Scooter Maker Hits 1 Million Miles

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – Scoot has reached 1,000,000 miles in San Francisco today. Thousands of members have taken thousands of rides over the past 3.5 years. Scoot launched to the public in September 2012, with just 35 scooters & 5 locations. Each year, Scoot has expanded its reach and availability for residents of the City by the Bay. San Francisco is, as we know, 7x7 so scooting one million miles is like riding from SOMA to Ocean Beach 142,857 times. More importantly, if every one of those million miles had been in a car or taxi, instead of on an electric scooter, there’d be an additional 1.2 million pounds of CO2 in the atmosphere. But there isn’t! Instead, our community rode one million electric miles on two wheels, thousands of times. ALSO READ: Scoot Quad – San Francisco’s ...

Skype Co-founder Launches Ultra-private Messaging App, Wire

FRANKFURT: A group of former Skype technologists, backed by the co-founder of the messaging platform, has introduced a new version of its own messaging service that promises end-to-end encryption for all conversations, including by video. Wire, a 50-person startup mostly made up of engineers, is stepping into a global political debate over encryption that pits privacy against security advocates, epitomized by the standoff between the US government and Apple. The company said on Thursday it was adding video calling to a package of private communications services that go beyond existing messaging providers. Rivals such as Facebook's Messenger and WhatsApp or Telegram offer encryption on only parts of a message's journey or for a specific set of services, it said. Wire, which is b...

Code.org Hacked, Emails and Locations Data of Volunteers Compromised

An anonymous reader allegedly quoting an email from Code.org, claims that the database of the non-profit organization has been breached: Some personal data was accessed on our web site by a firm exploiting a client-side vulnerability. Your email address and your location, if you provided it, were compromised and may have been read. The exploit was limited to engineers and others who volunteered to help in classrooms. No student or teacher accounts were impacted, nor passwords or additional information. The exploit did not give hackers access to any of our servers. Earlier this week, a volunteer engineer told us he received an unsolicited recruiting email from a technical freelancing firm in Singapore. We determined the firm was able to retrieve the volunteer's private email addr...

Amazon Acquire 20 Boeing 767 Aircraft For It’s Air Delivery Network

In a bid to assume more control over its supply chain and reduce costs, American electronic commerce and cloud computing company Amazon.com Inc has announced the signing of a deal to lease 20 Boeing 767 aircraft to handle more of its own deliveries in the United States. Amazon had spent USD 11.5 billion on shipping last year and relies heavily on carriers like United Parcel Service Inc and FedEx Corp to deliver most of its packages, Reuters reported. "This is an incremental negative for FDX and UPS as it will likely remove some higher yielding express freight and parcel volume from each of the respective networks," RBC Capital Markets analyst John Barnes said. Meanwhile, American global courier delivery services company FedEx said the announcement was not a surprise and called Ama...
