YouTube Go Now Available in Beta, an ‘Offline-First’ App for India

Alphabet Inc's Google said on Tuesday it would roll out a mobile YouTube application designed for India, boosting the search company's presence in a burgeoning market with spotty Internet access. Since the fall, Google has been conducting extensive tests in India of YouTube Go, which allows users to save videos to watch offline and monitor their data use. A beta version of the app has been released in the Google Play Store in India, and will be released in other emerging markets later, company executives said in an interview. Reliance Jio Claim To Have 50 Million Paid Subscribers

Reliance Jio, India's newest telecom operator, is closing in on 50 million paid users, days before its free voice, free-data offer ends. Out of 100 million-plus free subscribers, nearly 50 million have signed up for its 'Prime' membership by paying a one-time charge of Rs 99 and buying data packs. A company official said that Jio has already achieved more than 50 per cent of the target set for Jio Prime membership. Jio's promotional Happy New Year plan that offered free voice and data ends on March 31. The company has offered customers Prime membership on payment of one-time fee of Rs 99. Alphabet's Google has announced the acquisition of Canadian technology firm AppBridge that helps companies transfer data to the technology giant's Cloud platform. Internet Company May Lose Permit if Service Not Started in 1 Year

Internet companies providing wireless service may lose their permit if they fail to start commercial service within a year of getting spectrum from the Department of Telecom, the regulator Trai said. "For ISP licensees having spectrum assigned from the DoT, a provision should be made in the licensee agreement...that licensee shall offer the commercial service to its subscribers on demand within 12 months from the date of spectrum assignment...failing which spectrum assigned to ISP licensee may be cancelled," Trai said. The suggestions are part of Trai's recommendations on spectrum usage charges and presumptive adjusted gross revenue for internet service providers and commercial VSAT service providers.
