The news may not affect the window users, but the mac users may surely be disheartened after such decision of the social networking website.
Twitter bought the software that discovered twitter for Mac (previously known as Tweetie for Mac)back in 2010, but the application remained in weak position for quite some time with the app getting only one and a half stars on the App Store on Macbook.

The hardcore users are probably opting for other apps that have survived over the years like Tweetbot or Twitterific. The twitter should look over its development community and should stop experimenting unless needed or it will drive its users to move to third party websites providing tweeting experience.
Otherwise, the app is most loved by users and is mostly referred to as breaking news social platform.
