Coolpad takes Xiaomi to court over patent infringement

Coolpad has taken Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi to court over alleged patent infringement in the wake of times when Xiaomi has filed a US$10 billion IPO in Hong Kong.

Coolpad has officially confirmed the news on Thursday saying that its subsidiary, Yulong Computer Communications Technology Co. Ltd has sued Xiaomi Communications Technology Co. Ltd. and the first branch of Xiaomi Co. Ltd.

According to the reports, the company has asked a ban of 8 Xiaomi smartphones that include Xiaomi Mi Mix 2, Redmi Note 4X, Mi 6, Mi Max 2, Mi Note 3, Mi 5X, Redmi Note 5 and Redmi 5 Plus.

The company has alleged that Xiomi has caused an infringement upon the invention patent listed as “Multi-mode mobile communication terminal and method for call recording.”

Surprisingly, this is not the first time when Xiaomi has landed itself in a legal trouble. Earlier in 2004, Delhi High Court had ordered a suspension to halt Xiaomi advertising, manufacturing or importing of its devices in India after Ericsson had sued the company.

Ericsson had alleged that Xiaomi had infringed 8 patents upon AMR, EDGE and 3Gits Standard Essential Patents (SEP) that were related to AMR, EDGE and 3G. This had resulted in a complete ban for Chinese smartphone manufacturer to launch devices with MediaTek SoCs and henceforth has been selling devices powered by Qualcomm’s chipsets in India.
