Indian Activists Urge the Messaging Apps to Modify their Group Chat Feature

The technology-based messaging apps like Whatsapp Messenger, Telegram, Signal, Facebook and others are now obliged to bring in customization in the group chat feature on their respective platforms. A group of Indian activists on Friday said that the modifications should be made so that the users can no longer be added to group chats without express consent. The letter signed by Software Freedom Law Centre and a few other civil society organizations and individuals read,"In the absence of a mechanism to prevent themselves from being added to groups that they would not like to participate in, users have no option but to manually exit the groups." Iran Releases Messaging App Soroush Post Telegram Ban

The Iranian government has officially released a mobile messaging app, Soroush in a bid to encourage users to abandon the currently banned Telegram messenger. The app, Soroush, developed in the country has a majority of features already found in popular app Telegram, that was used extensively as a way of communicating during 2017's anti-government protests. The push for Soroush came into force when National Cyber Centre decided to withdraw Telegram's license to operate in the country. Afghanistan Moves To Block Whatsapp, Telegram Messaging Services

Afghanistan’s telecoms regulator wrote to internet service providers this week ordering them to block the messaging services WhatsApp and Telegram but it was not immediately clear whether they had complied. Use of social media and mobile instant messaging services has exploded in Afghanistan over recent years. Social media users and civil rights groups reacted with outrage to initial reports of the move and the letter sent by telecoms regulator ATRA was widely shared on social media. Some media reports, citing unidentified sources, said the move had been ordered by the National Directorate for Security to thwart the use of the encrypted messaging services by the Taliban and other insurgent groups. Security Flaw Found in WhatsApp, Telegram: Researchers

A computer security firm today revealed a flaw that could let hackers break into WhatsApp or Telegram messaging accounts using the very encryption intended to protect messages. Check Point Software Technologies said that it alerted Telegram and Facebook-owned WhatsApp last week, waiting until the vulnerability was patched before making it public. Check Point did not specify how many messaging accounts were at risk, but did say the flaw posed a danger to "hundreds of millions" of users accessing the messaging platform from web browsers in computers, as opposed to mobile applications. "This new vulnerability put hundreds of millions of WhatsApp Web and Telegram Web users at risk of complete account take over," Check Point head of product vulnerability Oded Vanunu said in a release. ...
