BSNL Testing Wi-Fi Technology to Connect 1 Lakh Panchayats in a Year

As the government's rural broadband project is facing long delays, telecom PSU BSNL is testing an alternative Wi-Fi-based network to connect about 1 lakh village panchayats in a year with high-speed Internet. "The process of laying fibre network calls for huge amount of physical labour. We have started a pilot to test broadband connectivity to village panchayats using Wi-Fi network. With this we are hopeful of connecting about 1 lakh village panchayats in a year," BSNL Chairman and Managing Director Anupam Shrivastava told PTI. ‘112’ To Soon Become Single Number For All Emergency Services

NEW DELHI: People will soon have to dial just a single-number '112' for help during emergency situations such as availing services of police, ambulance and the fire department. The proposal to have a single number for various emergency services, approved by the inter-ministerial panel Telecom Commission, would be similar to the '911' all-in-one emergency service in the US. All existing emergency numbers will be phased out within a year of rolling out 112, depending upon the awareness about this new facility. "Telecom Commission has accepted Trai's recommendation on single emergency number 112. Internet Users Count in India May Reach 50 Crores in 5-8 months

The number of Internet users in the country is expected to go up to 50 crore, from the present over 40 crore, in next 5-8 months, Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said today. "The number of people using Internet has crossed 40 crore in the country at present. I am expecting this number to go up to 50 crore in next 5-8 months. "According to our estimate, out of these, 70 per cent people are going to access Internet through mobile phones," Prasad said here at an Indore Management Association function. India may have 50 crore Internet subscribers next year: Prasad

New Delhi, (PTI) - Telecom Minister of India Mr. Ravi Shankar Prasad today said Internet subscribers may reach the 50 crore mark in the country next year. "India currently has 40 crore Internet subscribers. Earlier, I have said about the target to reach 50 crore users in two years but now it looks that the 50 crore mark is likely to be achieved next year," Prasad said during a discussion on "Integration of SC/ST entrepreneurs: Digital and Skill India" here. Reliance Communication Acquires Sistemas Indian Telecom Business

Billionaire Anil Ambani-led Reliance Communications today said it will take over Russian conglomerate Sistema's Indian mobile telephony venture that operates under the MTS brand. While financial details of the deal were not immediately announced, RCom said Sistema Shyam Teleservices Ltd (SSTL) will hold a 10 percent equity stake in RCom as a result of the deal. In addition, RCom will assume the liability to pay the government installments for SSTL's spectrum, amounting to Rs 392 crore per annum for the next 10 years. Hackers broke into nearly 2,000 Vodafone UK customer accounts

LONDON- Vodafone UK said on Saturday hackers had accessed the accounts of 1,827 of its customers this week, the second cyber attack on a British telecoms company this month. The attackers had potentially gained access to the victims' bank sort codes and the last four numbers of their bank accounts, along with their names and mobile telephone numbers, a Vodafone spokesman said. "This incident was driven by criminals using email addresses and passwords acquired from an unknown source external to Vodafone," he added in a statement. (more…)
