Vodafone and BSNL Go toe-to-toe with Jio’s New Rs 349 Plan

Since Jio’s entry in the Indian telecom market, the competition for the best data plan has been fierce; with ever dropping prices and better data plan deals. Vodafone and BSNL, two major competitors of Mukesh Ambani’s telecom company have announced a new prepaid plan, priced at Rs 349 each. Vodafone subscribers will benefit from 3GB of 4G/3G data per day, unlimited local, STD and roaming calls, and 100 SMS messages per day for the duration of 28 days. As for BSNL users, they will benefit from 1GB data and 100 SMS everyday but for 54 days. The prepaid pack proposed by Vodafone rivals leading telecom company Airtel’s Rs 349 recharge and Jio’s Rs 299 prepaid plans. With a budget of Rs 349, Airtel offers 3GB data, 100 SMS per day and unlimited STD, and national roaming calls for 28 days....

Malaysian Billionaire Set to Lose $7 billion after Aircel’s Bankruptcy Filing

Malaysian billionaire T. Ananda Krishnan’s company is set to make a loss of around $7 billion from a failed 12-year investment in the Indian telecom company Aircel Ltd, which officially announced the start of insolvency proceedings on Wednesday. Krishnan’s holding company Maxis Communcations Bhd had spent about $3.4 billion in shareholder rights to Aircel; amount which they will never see again. A person close to the company said anonymously that the holding company has also spent around 1.2 billion in Aircel in return for common stock. They also subscribed to $1.6 billion of redeemable preference shares. Trai For 40% Carbon Emission Cut In Telecom Networks By 2023

Telecom regulator Trai today recommended 40 per cent carbon emission reduction in telecom network by 2022-23 with base year being 2011-12. The regulator has also suggested that the government should pass all the benefits granted under various schemes for using renewable energy technologies to telecom operators. "The target for reduction in carbon emission be set as 30 per cent by year 2019-20 taking base year as 2011-12 and 40 per cent by the year 2022-23. The targets should be reviewed in the year 2022-23," Trai said in its recommendation to the Department of Telecom on approach towards sustainable telecommunications. Anil Ambani-led Reliance Communications today agreed to merge its wireless telecom business with smaller rival Aircel to create the country's 4th-biggest mobile phone operator with asset base of more than Rs 65,000 crore. In the largest consolidation in the countrys telecom sector, RCom and Aircels majority owner, Malaysias Maxis Communications Berhad (MCB), announced signing of definitive documents for the merger of their Indian wireless businesses.
