Facebook developing camera app similar to Snapchat: Report

Facebook Inc (FB.O) is developing a stand-alone camera app, similar to disappearing photo app Snapchat, to increase user engagement, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the matter. The app, being developed by Facebook's "friend-sharing" team in London, is in its early stages and may never come to fruition, according to the report. NEW YORK: After changing the orthodox ways of chatting, video messaging application Snapchat is now reportedly working to give tough competition to Google with its own augmented reality (AR) "smart" glasses. According to a TechCrunch report, Snapchat has hired developers from major augmented reality groups like Microsoft's HoloLens, PTC's (formerly Qualcomm's) Vuforia and eye-tracking tech maker Eyefluence to make Snapchat's pair of "smart" glasses. The company showed interest when Google launched Glass and later bought Vergence Labs, which produced a pair of glasses equipped with an embedded camera for $15 million in March 2014. Snapchat Raises $175 Million Funding from Fidelity at Flat Valuation

Snapchat Inc. which makes a free app called Snapchat for sharing quick disappearing images and videos has recently raised a funding of $175 M from Fidelity at a $16 billion valuation, according to the Wall Street Journal. The catch is that Snapchat’s last round of funding in May 2015 reportedly valued the company at $16 billion, a 60% bump from its previous round in December 2014. Fidelity bought shares at $30.72 in February after paying that price last March. In the fourth quarter, a separate valuation committee at the mutual fund brought down the shares to $25.75. (more…)
