GST Will Not Impact Smartphone Demand In India: Report

The new Goods and Services Tax (GST) will have no impact on the smartphone demand in India, according to a latest telecom research. A German research firm GfK found that smartphone demand in India remained resilient in 2017, having levelled out slightly to 14 per cent year-on-year. "GfK expects the recently announced Goods and Services Tax (GST) will have no impact on smartphone demand in the country. GfK forecasts overall smartphone demand in the region will total 234 million units in 2017, an increase of 11 per cent year-on-year," the research said. Global smartphone demand totaled 347 million units in 2017, up 4 per cent year-on-year. This makes it the strongest second quarter on record, the research found. Xiaomi Wants to Increase Offline Sales to 50 Percent By Year End

Chinese handset maker Xiaomi today said it plans to ramp up its offline distribution channel in the country and is targeting around 50 per cent of its turnover from this segment. “Till now, our focus was on online sales. Now, we will focus both on online and offline distribution. We expect our share from offline to grow from current 10 per cent to 50 per cent by the end of this year. Scientists have developed an app that crowdsources ground-shaking information from smartphones to detect earthquakes and eventually warns users of impending jolts from nearby quakes. The app called MyShake, developed by researchers at University of California, Berkeley, runs in the background and draws little power, so that a phones onboard accelerometers can record local shaking any time of the day or night. India to cross 500 million Internet users this year: Ravi Shankar Prasad

The number of Internet users in the country is likely to reach 500 million this year, Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said today. "India has grown to around 400 million Internet users. If we take Trai numbers then it is somewhere close to 332 million. As per service providers, they were telling me that up to date it is 402 million.
