Niti Aayog to Push “Make in India” for Medical Devices

Government policy think tank, Niti Aayog is all geared up to boost production of medical devices in India. In its meeting held on Wednesday, the organisation discussed mull measures like tax-based incentives and caps on distributor and retailer margins, as reported by sources. The meeting was held under the chairmanship of regulatory body's CEO Amitabh Kant. A person concerned with the matter informed that the Niti Aayog is currently working on proposals o incentivise domestic manufacturing of medical devices following orders from the Prime Minister's Office. An issue of NPCI's premium treatment to BHIM app was brought up by several leading entrepreneurs in the payments sector, including Paytm’s Vijay Shekhar Sharma and PhonePe’s Sameer Nigam, at the NITI Aayog event held last week, reiterating the suggestions made by the Watal Committee. Nasscom, telecom operators, and NITI Aayog have come together in creating a dedicated helpline 14444 for addressing all queries on digitial payments, as government takes strides to push for more digital transactions post demonetisation. After the fourth meeting of the Committee of Chief Ministers on digital payments, Convenor and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu said, plans are afoot to import one million PoS machines to enable cashless payments across India. DIPP secretary Amitabh Kant to take over as Niti Aayog CEO

Amitabh Kant, secretary in the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion, was on Thursday appointed as the chief executive officer of Niti Aayog. He will take over the new job after his retirement, next month-end. The competent authority has approved the appointment of Kant, a 1980 batch IAS officer of Kerala cadre, as CEO of Niti Aayog, after his superannuation in February-end, an order issued by Department of Personnel and Training said. “The terms and conditions of his appointment as CEO, Niti Aayog will be conveyed in due course,” it said. 59-year-old Kant has been appointed in place of former IAS officer Sindhushree Khullar, who was appointed as the first CEO of the National Institution for Transforming India (Niti) Aayog, a body that has replaced Planning Commission, ...
