Narayana Murthy Dismissed Threats From Artificial Intelligence, Call it “More Hype than Reality”

Infosys co-founder NR Narayana Murthy has flayed the high wage hikes that senior managements have been apportioning to themselves when the software industry is in trying times and has advised them to make "sacrifices" to maintain common mans faith in capitalism. Conceding that times are difficult for the IT services sector, Murthy dismissed the commonly attributed threats of artificial intelligence and automation as "more hype than reality". Terming the trend of no hikes for juniors and freshers as "worrisome," Murthy rued that the senior level people have been taking handsome hikes. "I think that is not the way to make capitalism acceptable to the larger masses in a country that has huge poverty," he said, speaking at the IIT-Bombay over the weekend. "If we believe in capitalism, ...

Sad over recent IT layoffs: Narayana Murthy

Founder Chairman of Infosys N R Narayana Murthy today expressed sadness over the IT companies laying off their employees as part of their cost cutting strategy. "...It is sad...," Murthy told in an email reply to a Pixr8 query about recent IT layoffs. Murthy, however, did not elaborate on the matter. Infosys had announced that it could hand out pink slips to hundreds of mid and senior-level employees as it carries out bi-annual performance review amid a challenging business environment. The development comes at a time when its peers Wipro and Cognizant are taking similar measures to control costs. The US-based Cognizant had rolled out a voluntary separation programme for directors, associate VPs and senior VPs, offering them 6-9 months of salary. Wipro, too, is learnt to hav...

Need to Reduce ‘Friction’ in Businesses in India: Narayana Murthy

To transform India's economy, there is a need to reduce "friction" in businesses and create an "environment" wherein the government has more trust in its entrepreneurs, Infosys founder N R Narayana Murthy has said. For the transformation of the Indian economy, he said it is essential for the younger generation to be daring and that India is integrated with the global economy. "We still have a little bit of work in reducing friction to businesses. We need to create an environment where the government has more trust in its entrepreneurs than it is today," Murthy, 70, told students of the prestigious Darden School of Business at the University of Virginia here. Murthy, the recipient of the 2017 Thomas Jefferson Foundation medal in Global Innovation, was responding to Darden School of...

Mohandas Pai Backs Narayana Murthy; Says COO Payment is Huge But Not Performance

Backing Infosys co-founder N R Narayana Murthy's view on pay hike to COO U B Pravin Rao being "not proper," company's ex-director T V Mohandas Pai today said the salary in this case is "spectacular" but performance is not. Alleging that Infosys' board was "misguided", Pai said the ""fundamental problem" was the pay hike given earlier to CEO Vishal Sikka "without any justification", because of which other executives were also expecting higher pay. He said salary levels in India cannot be compared with that in the US. "I totally agree with Murthy that it was not proper. We should have Indian norm for compensation; we can't follow American norm, we (Infosys) are not an American company," Pai, who was also formerly Chief Finance Officer of Infosys, told in a telephonic interview. T...

"Prime Minister is working hard to reduce corruption. Black money is a scourge on any developing economy. He (Narendra Modi) has been a great supporter of digital economy. So yesterday when he made the announcement, I thought it was a master stroke," he said at an event here. We Are Far, Far Away From Smart Cities: Narayana Murthy

Infosys co-founder NR Narayana Murthy today said the country was "far, far away" from realising the ambition of developing smart cities, a flagship programme of the Narendra Modi government. "Since we are far, far away from smart cities, I did not talk about it," Murthy said, when asked why he did not mention the smart city project during his one-hour lecture on 'City Systems' here this evening. "I am a doer, I am not just a talker," he said and asked the audience to visit Infosys's campus in Mysore to have a taste of what a smart city can be. Earlier in the lecture, organised by JSW Literature Live, Murthy also came down heavily on the lack of infrastructure in cities. "Poor infrastructure can drive away investments and talent," he said, and pointed out how Mumbai has ...
