We want them to understand how this PMP will work and how they can dove tail into that," Ministry of Electronics and IT Secretary Aruna Sundararajan told reporters today. The government has made no provision for its ambitious India Aspiration Fund, part of StartUp India initiative, for the next financial year and has reduced the allocation to Rs 100 crore from Rs 600 crore made earlier for the current fiscal. In order to provide support to startups through Fund of Fund operations, IAF, with a corpus of Rs 2,000 crore, was launched by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in August 2015 to enhance the equity availability to MSMEs. LIC was also made partner and co-investor in the India Aspiration Fund managed by SIDBI. As per the Budget 2017-18 document, the government had made allocation of Rs 500 crore for 2015-16 when the fund was launched. In the following year, a provision of Rs 600 crore was made but reduced significantly to Rs 100 crore as per the ...

Home Grown Startups Like “Ola and Flipkart” Losing Confidence: Saurabh Srivastava, IAN, Co-founder

Indian startups playing up the 'home-grown' card and asking government to shut doors to global companies indicate that companies are losing confidence, entrepreneur and angel investor Saurabh Srivastava said today. Instead, companies need to focus on ways to create an "enabling environment" without closing the doors for foreign players, he said. "One needs to have a balanced matured view... I think, we are losing confidence... there's no reason for that... We should make sure that the environment that we have is fair, free and level-playing field," Srivastava, who is also the chairman and co-founder of Indian Angel Network (IAN) said at a media briefing ahead of the TiE Global Summit. He added that while Indian companies should not be at a disadvantage, the focus needs to be on "how to c...

Apple Given Relaxation in Sourcing Norms For Three Years: Indian Govt

Apple has only been given a "breather" for the first three years by providing relaxation to it in local sourcing norms and the compulsory 30 per cent local sourcing clause has not been completely dispensed with, government today informed Rajya Sabha. "We have just given a relaxation that in the first three years, if local sourcing for their retail outlet is becoming difficult, the first three years will be exempted. But the average that we calculate for the local sourcing requirement will be applicable after that for five years. "So, it is not that as if we have completely dispensed with that clause. We have only said that give a breather for the first three years. We may do it afterwards," Commerce Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said. Replying to members question, she said...

Indian Govt. Banned 240 Websites Offering Escort Services

Government has banned 240 websites offering escort services on the recommendation of an expert committee under the Ministry of Home Affairs. "The order to block 240 escorts websites was issued to internet service providers on Monday on recommendations made by an expert committee under the Ministry of Home Affairs," an IT Ministry official said. He said that as per the process, complaints or representations are made by aggrieved persons or party before the expert committee, which then takes a call on it.  However, industry sources criticised the move, calling it directionless. "Content of all the websites cannot be blocked. The order has been issued without going into technical nitty gritty around it. If a website changes the name or link slightly, it will again start working," said an e...

How Modi Government Used Twitter Over The Last 2 Years

The NDA government led by Narendra Modi (@narendramodi) came into power in May 2014, pioneering a new wave in digital governance. As the Prime Minister marks two years in office today, we look back at how his vision of “minimum government, maximum governance” has been implemented via Twitter - from the Prime Minister himself to his ministers and their ministries to connect with Indian citizens through our live communications platform. In these two years, PM Modi’s following on Twitter has grown by 400% from 4 million to 20 million followers, a milestone he crossed last week making him the most-followed political leader in India and second in the world after Barack Obama (@barackobama). PM Modi’s most Retweeted Tweet remains his victory Tweet when he won the Lok Sabha election in 2014. ...

Leave India, We are Not Scared of You: Indian Government to Monsanto

U.S. seed company Monsanto is welcome to leave India if it does not want to lower prices of genetically modified cotton seeds as directed by the government, a minister said on Wednesday, in a sign the rift between New Delhi and the firm is widening. The comments come as Prime Minister Narendra Modi's nationalist government expects to develop its own genetically modified (GM) cotton varieties early next year to end Monsanto's dominance; it controls over 90 percent of cotton seed supply. New technologies are critical to lifting India's poor farm productivity, although even if India did develop a home-grown GM cotton variety in 2017, it would struggle to sustain a programme that needs to refresh seeds every decade or so, experts warned. The introduction of Monsanto's GM cotto...
