BigBasket and Grofers are in Talks For Possible Merger

India's online grocery delivery service BigBasket and smaller rival Grofers India Pvt. Ltd. have begun talks on a possible merger, Indian newspaper Mint reported on Wednesday, citing sources. If the merger goes through, SoftBank Group (9984.T), which is an existing investor in Grofers', will participate in a $60 million to $100 million funding round in the merged company, the report added. The talks, which are in early stages, may value BigBasket at about $700 million to $800 million, while Grofers could be valued at $150 million to $200 million, Mint added. Online grocery sales are a fast growing segment in India's e-commerce industry as more consumers log in to internet for their purchases.

Walmart today announced a $50 million strategic investment in New Dada, China’s largest local on-demand logistics and grocery O2O ecommerce platform. Indonesia Based GO-JEK Acquires Bangalore Based Startup Pianta

Indonesia's based food and grocery delivery startup GO-JEK has acquired Bangalore based Pianta, a marketplace for home healthcare services, for an undisclosed sum. Post the acquisition, Pianta's eight member team will merge with GO-JEK's engineering centre in Bangalore. Founded in 2010, GO-JEK has over two lakh motorbike taxis, known as "ojeks" in its fleet. Since then, the company has diversified into food, grocery and even courier delivery services. GO-JEK raised $550 million in 2016 from the likes of KKR, Warburg Pincus, Farallon Capital and Capital Group Private Markets. Spencer’s Retail has forayed into online space with the acquisition of 100 per cent stake in meragrocer.com at an undisclosed sum to grab 10 per cent of revenue in 4-5 years.The deal is a mixture of debt and equity. This acquisition makes meragrocer.com a subsidiary of Spencer’s, and will form the starting point of Spencer’s online retail business, Spencer’s said in a statement. “With the acquisition we will be able to enter the online channel for Spencer’s soon.
