Most Apps Share Your Data With Google, Facebook: Study

More than 70 per cent of smartphone apps are reporting personal data to third-party companies like Google and Facebook, a new study has warned. When people install a new smartphone app, it asks for the users permission before accessing personal information. Some of the information these apps collect are necessary for them to work properly. However, once an app has permission to collect that information, it can share your data with anyone the developer wants to letting third-party companies track where you are, how fast you are moving and what you are doing, researchers said. Researchers from the IMDEA Networks Institute in Spain wanted to know how much data could potentially be collected without users knowledge, and to give users more control over their data. Mark Zuckerberg Gets Harvard Degree, Urges Harvard Grads to Take Risk

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg returned on Thursday to Harvard University, the school he dropped out of to start the pioneering social network, to urge its graduating class to help create a new social safety net to allow creative risk-taking. The 33-year-old tech founder of the world's largest social networking company said he would never have been able to risk leaving the elite Ivy League school if he had not known that his family would have been able to support him if he failed. "There is something wrong with our system when I can leave here and make billions of dollars in ten years when millions of students can't afford to pay off their loans, let alone start a business," Zuckerberg told the crowd on a cold, drizzly day when graduates' dark academic robes stood in contrast to the ...

After Backlash on Internet.org, Facebook Launched Another Wi-fi Service Program in India

Social networking giant Facebook has rolled out in India, its Express Wi-Fi service that offers Internet facility through public hotspots to users in rural parts of the country. The commercial roll out of the project comes a year after Facebook pulled the plug on the controversial Free Basics programme that drew severe criticism from advocates of net neutrality. Unlike Free Basics that provided access to selected websites for free, Express Wi-Fi works on a "paid" model and the access will not be restricted to any particular websites. Users can log onto public wi-fi hotspots made available through partner telecom operators and buy daily, weekly or monthly data packs being sold through local entrepreneurs. Facebook has also onboarded as a partner, telecom giant Bharti Airtel, whi...

Instagram Stories Overtakes Snapchat to Hit 200M Daily Active Users

Facebook-owned Instagram has claimed that more than 200 million people a day use its Stories feature, which competes against Snapchat. Snapchat had 161 million daily active users at the end of last year, ahead of Snap's March initial public offer, which was the largest by a technology firm in three years despite decelerating user growth. Instagram Stories' daily active users announced on Thursday has grown by 33% from the 150 million daily active users it had in January. The Instagram feature, which launched last year, lets users and businesses post a string of photos and videos that disappear after 24 hours, similar to Snapchat. Facebook last month introduced an update to allow users to tweak photos on their smartphones with visual details like a rainbow or a beard of glitter,...

Facebook Nears 2 Billion Users Mark: Report

Popular social network Facebook is set to become the first 2 billion-user company this year, according to a media report which attributed its "impressive" user growth to "promotional data plans" from countries like India. Facebook had 1.86 billion monthly active users as of the end of 2016, up from 1.79 billion the previous quarter and 1.59 billion a year earlier, the company said in its fourth quarter earnings report. Chief Financial Officer David Wehner said Facebook added more users this quarter compared to a year earlier than any quarter since the company went public in 2012. Wehner attributed the "impressive" user growth to "promotional data plans" from third parties in countries like India as well as Internet.org, Facebook's free stripped-down Internet offering in developing...

Facebook’s Oculus Ordered Pay $500 Million in Suit on Stolen Tech

A US jury has ordered Facebook and creators of its Oculus Rift to pay USD 500 million to gaming software firm ZeniMax in a lawsuit that claimed the virtual reality technology was stolen. The Texas jury made the award yesterday in a trial in which Oculus was accused of basing its Rift headset on technology stolen from ZeniMax's virtual reality software, court documents showed. The lawsuit claimed Oculus founder Palmer Luckey and his colleagues developed the virtual reality gear using source code illegally obtained from the gaming firm. Luckey was ordered to pay USD 50 million of the award and another former Oculus executive, Brendan Iribe USD 150 million. The two executives were accused of violating a non-disclosure agreement with ZeniMax and copying the source code and other do...

Facebook to Develop App For Television Set-Top Boxes: Report

Facebook is creating an app for television set-top boxes, including Apple's Apple TV, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the matter. The world's biggest online social network is also in discussions with media companies to license long-form, TV-quality programming, the report said on Tuesday. Facebook declined to comment. An app for set-top boxes would bring Facebook closer to live video and video advertisements. Getting advertisers to buy more video ads is key to Facebook's continued revenue growth as such ads fetch higher rates from advertisers than text or photo-based ads. Live video is also becoming a highly competitive feature on social platforms, with companies competing to stream major sports events and exclusive video components from high-profi...

America is a nation of immigrants and should be proud of it, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said as he criticised President Donald Trump's decision to severely limit immigrants and refugees from certain Muslim-majority countries. "Like many of you, I'm concerned about the impact of the recent executive orders signed by President Trump," Zuckerberg wrote on his Facebook page. "We need to keep this country safe, but we should do that by focusing on people who actually pose a threat ... We should also keep our doors open to refugees and those who need help. That's who we are." "We should also keep our doors open to refugees and those who need help. That's who we are. Had we turned away refugees a few decades ago, Priscilla's family wouldn't be here today," he wrote of his wife, Priscilla ...
