Pentagon awards Microsoft $10 Bn ‘War Cloud’ Deal

The Pentagon has awarded Microsoft a USD 10 billion cloud computing contract called JEDI. The contentious bidding process for the contract pitted Microsoft, Amazon, and Oracle, among others, against one another. Bidding for the huge government contract has attracted more attention than usual, sparked by speculation early in the process that Amazon would be awarded the deal. Tech giants Oracle and IBM pushed back with their own bids. Oracle also challenged the bid process in federal court but lost. The resulting system will store and process vast amounts of classified data, allowing the US military to use artificial intelligence to speed up its war planning and fighting capabilities. HCL Completes Acquisition of Butler America Aerospace

IT services major HCL Technologies today said it has completed its USD 85 million acquisition of Butler America Aerospace. The all-cash deal, announced in October last year, will strengthen HCL Technologies' position in the aerospace and defence engineering services space. "The acquisition has been completed with effect from January 3, 2017," HCL said in a filing to the BSE. Butler Aerospace provides engineering, design services and aftermarket engineering services to US aerospace and defence customers, serving them in areas of mechanical and structural design, electrical design, tool design and aftermarket engineering services. Defence Ministry of India To Promote Startups: Manohar Parrikar

Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar on Friday said his ministry was in the process of formulating a special programme to promote startups. "The defence ministry will start a programme to promote startups. The ministry has never done something like this before but is going out of the way into (doing) something different," Parrikar said at the inauguration of a business incubation centre here. Parrikar, a former Goa chief minister, said he was keen on offering defence ministry-related research and development projects to the coastal state.
