Year’s Biggest Tech IPO- Line Launch Goes Well

Japan's Line Corp saw its shares rocket on their Tokyo debut, extending a strong start in New York the day before, and taking the value of the messaging app firm to $8.6 billion in the year's biggest tech IPO. The operator of the world's seventh most-used messaging app listed first in New York in a move widely seen as a sign of determination to challenge global peers and eventually expand beyond strongholds of Japan and Southeast Asia. However, Line's 218 million global monthly active users pale in comparison to the 1 billion of market-leader WhatsApp and 900 million of Messenger, both owned by Facebook Inc. Tencent Holdings Ltd's WeChat, which dominates in China, has 697 million. "We're providing the same kind of services as Facebook and Google, the internet giants of the world," Chi...

Skype Co-founder Launches Ultra-private Messaging App, Wire

FRANKFURT: A group of former Skype technologists, backed by the co-founder of the messaging platform, has introduced a new version of its own messaging service that promises end-to-end encryption for all conversations, including by video. Wire, a 50-person startup mostly made up of engineers, is stepping into a global political debate over encryption that pits privacy against security advocates, epitomized by the standoff between the US government and Apple. The company said on Thursday it was adding video calling to a package of private communications services that go beyond existing messaging providers. Google Acquired Singapore Startup Pie, Looking to Build Engineering Team

Google has acquired Singapore-based startup Pie.co, a slack like chat platform. The move behind this acquisition is to bring good engineers from Asia-pacific into Google. In its blog Google said, According to the UN, 300 million people came online for the first time last year. Put another way, in 2015, there were more people using the Internet for the first time than there were Americans using the Internet already. But the computing experience for most of these first-timers, coming online in places like India, Indonesia and the Philippines, is very different from the one many of us grew up with – and not the one that most of Google’s services were originally designed for. Their main (and in most cases, only) “computer” is a low-cost smartphone. Connectivity is expensive in relatio...

It now has nearly one billion users worldwide and has become a key target for scammers. Speaking to This Is Money, David Emm, principal security researcher at Kaspersky Lab, an internet security and anti-virus software company, says the scam operates in a range of languages. Facebook Owned messenger App WhatsApp has silently updated its Android version group limit of users which includes now 256 users. However, it should reach Windows Phone, BlackBerry, and other platforms soon. WhatsApp last month got rid of its $1 (approximately Rs. 68) annual subscription fee. Until now,WhatsApp asked some users to pay an annual fee for using the app after the first year of use - though as many of us experienced, most users were not asked to pay after a year, and instead were given extensions each year.   I...
