Infosys Founder Son-in-Law Named New British Finance Minister

Indian-origin politician Rishi Sunak was appointed as the UK's new finance minister on Thursday by Prime Minister Boris Johnson in a Cabinet reshuffle. Sunak, the son-in-law of Infosys Co-founder Narayana Murthy, will join Home secretary Priti Patel on the top government bench as the Chancellor of the Exchequer. Earlier, Pakistani-origin Sajid Javid resigned as Chancellor in a shock move in one of the biggest shakeups since Johnson won a thumping majority in the December 2019 general election. He is replaced by Sunak, who was until now Javid's junior as the Chief Secretary to the Treasury and seen as a rising star within the Cabinet. The 39-year-old is set to move into No. 11 Downing Street, next door to the Prime Minister's Office as he takes charge of the second most importan...

The 170 Year Old Journey of Chai in India

There is barely a person in India who is not fond of chai that is tea. But do you know where did it come from? So let’s talk about the 170 years of Chai in India. The craze of Chai started when a Scottish mandarin smuggled a tea plant from China in 1848, where the Chinese people have been drinking it for around 2,000 years. Long ago, the value of tea was very high. In 1635, the prices of tea in England were as high as £6 to £10 per pound of the herb (£600 to £1,000, today). Later in 1662, in the wedding of King Charles and Catherine of Braganza, her dowry comprised of a chest of tea, and the island of Bombay for an annual lease of £10, which was then equal to the cost of a pound of tea in England. However, later by the 18th century, due to certain reasons, the English were not able t...

Uber Limits Driver Hours in Britain to 10

US ride-hailing app Uber today said it would cap the number of hours its drivers can work in Britain from next week in a bid to increase safety after heavy criticism of its business practices. The new policy means that drivers must take an uninterrupted six-hour break after 10 hours, and will not be able to log on to the app during that time. The company had already been messaging drivers who were working too long to switch off its app. "We believe this is an industry first and are not aware of any other private hire operator in the UK that has introduced such a limit," Uber said in a statement. "It's another example of how Uber uses technology to help enhance driver and passenger safety," Andrew Byrne, Uber's head of policy, was quoted as saying. Uber is currently appealing a...

UK Says WhatsApp Lets Paedophiles and Gangsters Operate Beyond the Law

Britain said WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption communication services allowed paedophiles and organised crime groups to operate beyond the reach of the law and called on the messaging service to move faster to help governments catch offenders. After four militant attacks in Britain that killed 36 people this year, senior ministers have stepped up demands over the past six months to make internet companies do more to suppress extremist content and allow access to encrypted communications. The government says full-scale encryption has complicated the job of law enforcement both in thwarting extremist attacks and in investigating more commonplace crimes. Internet companies say they want to help governments remove extremist or criminal material but also have to balance the demands of s...

Britain Loses 1 Billion Pounds Through VAT Fraud and Error by Amazon and eBay Sellers

Britain is losing up to 1 billion pounds ($1.28 billion) a year in value added tax (VAT) because of fraud or error by sellers using online marketplaces eBay and Amazon, a report by the government auditor said. The National Audit Office (NAO) said on Wednesday that the sellers involved are often based in China and that consumer regulator Trading Standards had found that U.S. companies Amazon and eBay had failed to remove sellers that were flouting VAT rules, even after being informed of the sellers' non-compliance. "The size of the VAT losses due to online VAT fraud or error on transactions taking place on Amazon’s and eBay’s online platforms could be up to 1 billion pounds a year," the NAO said, citing latest figures from the Trading Standards Institute. All retailers selling to c...

Players in Financial Services May Relocate From London: T V Mohandas Pai

Indian IT players catering to clients in the financial services space in London may shift their operations to other parts of Europe in the wake of Britain's exit from the European Union, says tech investor T V Mohandas Pai. For the Indian IT industry, the biggest immediate impact would be the shift in the movement of Pound Sterling, which has now become cheaper, Pai said. "That's already impacting them, marginally, depending upon who is exposed to business in the UK," he told news agency noting that over a period of time, lot of work is being done by Indian IT companies in UK financial services space in London. "Now, many of them may migrate to (other parts of) Europe. In case they migrate to Europe, they have to shift to Europe. What happens there is something that needs to be seen. So...
