Pentagon stalls $10 bn cloud contract given to Amazon

The Pentagon has put off awarding a $10 billion cloud computing contract sought by Amazon, saying the process will be reviewed by the newly appointed defense secretary. Amazon was considered a strong contender to provide technology for the Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure (JEDI) program a contract that is also being pursued by Microsoft but critics argued that the bidding process favored the Seattle-based technology titan. The move to stall the contract process came a week after Mark Esper was confirmed as the new US secretary of defense. Esper was selected by US President Donald Trump, who has lashed out at Amazon and company founder Jeff Bezos, who owns The Washington Post. "Secretary Esper is looking at the Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure (JEDI) program," def...

AWS Launches a Machine Learning Tool Amazon Forecast

Amazon’s cloud computing services known as the Amazon Web Services (AWS) has launched a new pre-built machine learning tool that will make it easier for developers to generate predictions based on time-series data. The new service will be called Amazon Forecast. Amazon has built a number of models to handle its own data in its retail business and this one is essentially the same technology that Amazon uses to forecast demand on its retail site. Under this, the users provide the company with all of their supply chain data and then give the service the variables that could have impact on the forecast. “With just three clicks, you can give us the information and get a forecast,” AWS CEO Andy Jassy said. “It’s super simple and when we benchmarked with customers in the private beta and o...

Cisco Ties up With AWS to Help Businesses Run Apps in The Cloud

Cisco Systems has reportedly tied up with Amazon's Amazon Web Services for the purpose of offering software tools that would make it easier for Cisco's customers to use Amazon's data centers to run their business applications. This step has been taken as a part of a push at Cisco, one of the biggest suppliers of the routers and switches that send data across computer networks. Also, the basic motive is to gain more revenue from software and stay current with longtime business customers that are seeking to do more work with cloud computing companies like Amazon, Alphabet's Google Cloud unit or Microsoft's Azure. "The way we like to think about it at Cisco is, we're growing and adding a software business to a very important hardware business," Kip Compton, Cisco's senior vice president o...

Amazon Web Services Eyes to Sell its Networking Switches

Amazon’s cloud service business ‘Amazon Web Services’ is eyeing to sell its own networking switches to the business customers. Amazon Web Services could price its white-box switches 70-80% less than comparable switches from networking giant Cisco, as reported by one of the persons with direct knowledge of the unit's plan. The company expects to launch the switches in the next 18 months. It stated that the devices will include open-source software and unbranded hardware known as "white-box" switches and will be introduced with built-in connections to AWS cloud services, such as servers and storage. Amazon Web Services (AWS) offers reliable, scalable, and inexpensive cloud computing services. It is a subsidiary of Amazon.com and offers on-demand cloud computing platforms to individuals...

Amazon Posts Largest Profit in its History on Sales, Tax Boost

Amazon.com Inc on Thursday reported a profit near $2 billion, the largest in its history, as the online retailer drew millions of new customers to its Prime fast-shipping club for the holiday season and as changes to U.S. tax law added to its bottom line. Shares rose more than 6 percent in extended trading, after previously closing down 4 percent on the Nasdaq. Seattle-based Amazon is using fast shipping, television shows exclusive to its website and forays into new technology, such as its voice-controlled Alexa devices, to attract high-spending Prime members. Amazon said price cuts at Whole Foods Market, which it acquired for $13.7 billion last year, are helping it win grocery sales, too. The world's largest online retailer said net income more than doubled to $1.86 billion, or $...
