Amazon agrees to buy self-driving startup Zoox for over $1 billion

Seattle, 26th June, 2020: Amazon has agreed to pay over $1 billion to buy self-driving startup Zoox Inc, the Information reported on Thursday, citing sources, in a move that would expand the e-commerce giant's reach in autonomous-vehicle technology. The report did not mention the exact purchase price and added Amazon is unlikely to disclose it when the deal is announced, likely to be on Friday. A majority of Zoox investors are getting their money back, with some making a positive return, the report added. China’s largest technology company and search engine Baidu Inc and China's leading electric car maker BYD have announced their plan that bothr the companies are partnering with an aim to start mass producing self-driving cars in the coming three years' time. It was last year that Baidu had launched Project Apollo, which was titled after the Apollo moon landing project. The project was started to mark the start of its push to get self-driving cars on the road in China. Driverless vehicles operated by Uber Technologies Inc were back on the road in San Francisco on Monday after one of its self-driving cars crashed in Arizona, the ride-hailing company said. Uber's autonomous vehicles in Arizona and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, remained grounded but were expected to be operating again soon, according to a spokeswoman for the company, who refused to be identified. "We are resuming our development operations in San Francisco this morning," she said in an email. Uber's San Francisco program is currently in development mode. Select members of the public can hail a free ride through their smartphones in taxis operated by nuTonomy, an autonomous vehicle software startup.
