Apple Looking to Invest $1 Billion in SoftBank Tech Fund

Apple Inc has held talks to invest up to USD 1 billion in a new USD 100 billion tech fund being set up by Japan's SoftBank Group Corp, a source familiar with the matter told Reuters. SoftBank is investing at least USD 25 billion in the fund and has been in talks with Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) for an investment that could go up to USD 45 billion. SoftBank has said it plans to make future large-scale investments via the tech fund, rather than on its own. Some of SoftBank's moves have caused concern among analysts, as the firm wrestles with a 13.7 trillion-yen (USD 119 billion) debt pile. SoftBank and Apple were not immediately available for comment. Through the investment, Apple would hope to gain insight on emerging technologies, the Journal said, adding that the...

Amazon challenges Apple and Spotify with New Music Streaming Service

Amazon.com Inc on Wednesday launched a full-fledged music streaming service with subscriptions as low as $3.99 per month for owners of its Amazon Echo speaker, accelerating the industry trend toward more flexible pricing after years of sticking to $9.99 subscriptions. The new streaming service, called "Amazon Music Unlimited," lets users access a vast catalog of songs on demand, similar to Spotify and Apple Music. Subscriptions to play music on the Echo cost $3.99 per month; for access beyond that device, subscriptions cost $7.99 a month for members of Amazon's Prime shipping and video service and $9.99 for non-members. Amazon will continue to offer Prime members a limited streaming service for free. As it plunges deeper into the crowded streaming field, Amazon is counting on the Ech...

Initial quantities of the iPhone 7 Plus have sold out globally as Apple Inc prepares to roll out its new gadget in stores, the company said Wednesday. Supplies of the larger size of Apple's new phone have been exhausted in all shades, and the smaller iPhone 7 has also sold out in the new jet black color, the company said. Customers who enter Apple Stores Friday, when the gadgets hit shelves, will not be able to purchase the sold-out phones on site, but they can continue to place orders for their desired models online, Apple said. "We sincerely appreciate our customers' patience as we work hard to get the new iPhone into the hands of everyone who wants one as quickly as possible," Apple spokeswoman Trudy Muller said in a statement. Apple launched the new phones at a San Francisc...

Apple Acquired Health Startup Gliimpse Founded By Indian-Origin Duo

IANS- Tech giant Apple has quietly acquired personal health data startup Gliimpse founded by two Indian-origin entrepreneurs. The acquisition happened earlier this year but was not publicly announced, according to media reports. An Apple spokesperson has responded, saying: "Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans." Founded in 2013 by serial entrepreneur Anil Sethi and Karthik Hariharan, Gliimpse provides a secure platform where consumers can manage and share their medical records and information. Before Gliimpse, Sethi had co-founded several health startups like Xlipstream, Pinch Bio and Dakota Imaging. This acquisition will likely strengthen Apple's efforts to collect or manage health data. In 2014, it had...

Apple To Boost China Investments as Demand Slows

Apple Inc will boost its investment in China, one of its largest but increasingly challenging markets, and build its first Asia-Pacific research and development center in the country, Chief Executive Tim Cook said on Tuesday. Cook made the pledge during a trip to China, at least his second in four months, as demand for Apple's iPhones has plummeted in the world's second-largest economy and the government remains wary about foreign technology. Apple's new research and development center will be built by the end of the year, Cook told Vice Premier Zhang Gaoli, one of China's most senior officials, according to CCTV, the official Chinese state broadcaster. The center will unite Apple's engineering and operations teams in China and is also intended to deepen the company's ties to part...

Apple Started Bounty Bug Program For Developers

Apple Inc said it plans to offer rewards of up to $200,000 (£152,433) to researchers who find critical security bugs in its products, joining dozens of firms that already offer payments for help uncovering flaws in their products. Such rewards are already offered by dozens of firms, including Facebook Inc, Google, Microsoft Corp, Tesla Motors Inc and Yahoo Inc. The program will initially be limited to about two dozen researchers who Apple will invite to help identify hard-to-uncover security bugs in five specific categories. Those researchers have been chosen from the group of experts who have previously helped Apple identify bugs, but have not been compensated for that work, the company said. The most lucrative category, which offers rewards of up to $200,000, is for bugs in Apple's ...

How Apple Backing Helped China’s Taxi Aggregator Didi Chuxing To Outrun Uber in China

Apple Inc's $1 billion investment in car-hailing app Didi Chuxing in May helped accelerate Uber's decision to agree a halt to a costly two-year battle with its rival in China, people close to the companies and analysts said. Didi Chuxing Technology Co and Uber Technologies Inc raised billions of dollars in funding and spent heavily on discounted rides as they slugged it out for drivers, passengers and market share in the world's second-biggest economy. Uber finally ceded this week, realizing it was no match for a cash-rich rival with the backing of three of the world's largest technology giants. It agreed to give up its independence in return for a nearly one-fifth stake in a bigger Didi. Didi raised far more money than Uber China making China the first market where Uber's strategy of...

Apple Given Relaxation in Sourcing Norms For Three Years: Indian Govt

Apple has only been given a "breather" for the first three years by providing relaxation to it in local sourcing norms and the compulsory 30 per cent local sourcing clause has not been completely dispensed with, government today informed Rajya Sabha. "We have just given a relaxation that in the first three years, if local sourcing for their retail outlet is becoming difficult, the first three years will be exempted. But the average that we calculate for the local sourcing requirement will be applicable after that for five years. "So, it is not that as if we have completely dispensed with that clause. We have only said that give a breather for the first three years. We may do it afterwards," Commerce Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said. Replying to members question, she said...
