Google Under Pressure From China Remove Apps supporting Hongkong Protesters

Google removed a mobile game that let people play as a Hong Kong protester, saying it violated a policy against cashing in on conflicts. The move came after Apple removed an app criticized by China for allowing protesters in Hong Kong to track police. Finding out, Beijing steps up pressure on foreign companies deemed to be providing support to the pro-democracy movement. Google said its decision to yank "The Revolution of Our Times" game from its Play Store did not result from any takedown requests by police or any other party outside the California-based company. "We have a longstanding policy prohibiting developers from capitalizing on sensitive events such as attempting to make money from serious ongoing conflicts or tragedies through a game," Google said in response. App Store Generated 93% More Revenue Than Google Play in Q3

There has always been a competition between Android and iOS and with this, the fight between the App Store and the Google Play Store also emerged. In the third quarter of 2018, that gap between the two widened considerably. In this quarter, the App Store earned nearly 93% more than Google Play, the largest gap since at least 2014. The company says that approximately 66% of the $18.2 billion in mobile app revenue generated in Q3 2018 came from Apple’s  App Store. The App Store made $12 billion in the quarter, up 23.3% from the $9.7 billion it made during the same period in the previous year. On the other hand, Google Play earned $6.2 billion in the quarter, up 21.5% from the year-ago quarter’s $5.1 billion. In terms of app downloads, however, Google Play still has the edge thanks t...

Cook shared the data on Sunday during a speech at China’s top public cyber policy forum, organised by the Cybersecurity Administration of China (CAC), which oversees internet regulation including censorship. Earlier this year, Apple said that developers had earned roughly $70 billion in total revenue through the store. Apple is facing criticism from local users and rights groups for bowing to pressure from Beijing cyber regulators after it decided to remove hundreds of apps from its Chinese store this year, including messaging apps and virtual private network (VPN)...

Kim Kardashian Apologizes to Apple

When Paper Magazine said that Kim Kardashian was out to break the Internet, maybe they weren’t wrong? Kardashian’s emoji app, Kimoji, debuted in the Apple App Store Monday to great fanfare. Currently, it is the top paid app (knockingMinecraft: Pocket Edition off the pole position). Kimoji is also the App Store’s no. 11 highest-grossing app, generating more revenue currently than much-advertised games Boom Beach and Mobile Strike. The app — which features emoji of Kim’s most famous assets, as well as food and makeup — apparently caused an interruption in the App Store. While the app is very popular, it currently has only a 2-star rating. In a Facebook post and stream of tweets, she apologized to fans and followers about the App Store error. Apple, I'm so sorry I broke your App S...
