Amazon, Microsoft Look for Data Role in Self-Driving Cars With Here: Report

Amazon.com and Microsoft are in talks to supply cloud computing to digital mapping business Here.com, owned by a group of German carmakers developing self-driving cars, sources familiar with the matter said. Amazon is also considering becoming a shareholder in Here, two sources said. Last year, carmakers BMW, Audi and Mercedes struck a EUR 2.5 billion ($2.85 billion or roughly Rs. 18,928 crores) deal to buy Nokia's Here maps business. Intelligent mapping systems supply information to control self-driving cars, which are equipped with street-scanning sensors to measure traffic and road conditions. This location data can in turn be shared with other map users. "Amazon would take a stake as part of a broader deal to lock them in as a provider of cloud computing services," one sour...

Indian Govt Allows 100% FDI in Marketplace Model of E-commerce

The government permitted 100% foreign direct investment (FDI) in the marketplace format of e-commerce retailing with a view to attract more foreign investments. The norms on FDI in the sectors of e-commerce, and IT and ITeS are expected to be part of detailed guidelines, which would be rolled out soon by the government, sources said. Last week, a group of senior officials from departments of DIPP, corporate affairs and economic affairs, among others, discussed these matters in great detail. According to sources, the DIPP has suggested that 100% FDI should be allowed in “marketplace model e-commerce” activities. Amazon Acquire 20 Boeing 767 Aircraft For It’s Air Delivery Network

In a bid to assume more control over its supply chain and reduce costs, American electronic commerce and cloud computing company Amazon.com Inc has announced the signing of a deal to lease 20 Boeing 767 aircraft to handle more of its own deliveries in the United States. Amazon had spent USD 11.5 billion on shipping last year and relies heavily on carriers like United Parcel Service Inc and FedEx Corp to deliver most of its packages, Reuters reported. "This is an incremental negative for FDX and UPS as it will likely remove some higher yielding express freight and parcel volume from each of the respective networks," RBC Capital Markets analyst John Barnes said. Meanwhile, American global courier delivery services company FedEx said the announcement was not a surprise and called Ama...

Worried Analysts Question Amazon’s Logistics Plans

In the wake of Amazon.com Inc's disappointing financial results that sent shares plunging Thursday, analysts blamed rising costs to deliver goods, which increased to $4.5 billion in the quarter, up 24.4 percent from the same quarter last year. And they sharply questioned the company's plans to continue to make heavy investments in logistics, even at the expense of profits. They wondered why it was planning to buy more assets like trucks, and reportedly to lease jets, and worried it planned to spend the money to take on shippers like United Parcel Service Inc. "The so-called (earnings) miss was half fulfillment and half marketing," said Michael Pachter, a managing director of equity research at Wedbush Securities. The growing popularity of Prime, which promises free, two-day del...

Amazon may export delivery lessons from India to cut costs abroad

E-commerce giant Amazon.com is taking lessons learnt from its daily battles with India's choked roads and cramped cities to some of its largest developed markets, exporting a model of cheaper deliveries and reduced warehousing costs. Online shopping is booming in India, where millions of consumers are newly able to access the Internet thanks to cheap smartphones. For Amazon, it is already the largest contributor of new customers outside the United States. But, like local rivals Flipkart and Snapdeal, Amazon has struggled with deliveries in cities where snarl-ups are frequent and road signs unreliable. In response, firms have set up logistics networks and use motorbikes instead of trucks. Flipkart, for one, has tapped Mumbai's dabbawalas, a more than a century-old lunch box distrib...

8 Key Rules for Starting a Business on a Shoestring – Martin Zwilling

A few years ago, before the Internet was pervasive, before everyone carried a smartphone and before do-it-yourself software tools were available for free, it was difficult to reach a critical mass of new customers without spending a million dollars on a website, custom software and television advertising. Now you can match a big company with worldwide reach for a few thousand dollars. It’s a new age for aspiring entrepreneurs, where anyone with a dream or a hobby should be turning it into a business. The bad news is that many are already doing it, with competition growing, so the longer you wait, the less chance you have of getting there first. The good news is that most haven’t learned the new rules, so there is still room to surge ahead of the crowd. Here are some of the key new ...

Tech Companies work culture destroying employees lives – Moskovitz, Facebook Co-founder

Last week, I spoke to an ambitious group of high school students at SPARC in Berkeley. Several of them asked me about things I wish I had done or learned earlier in life, or regrets I had from earlier in my career. Again and again, I came back to the idea that I wish I had lived my life differently. 2006 was one of the best years for Facebook, and one of the worst years for me as a human. I wish I had slept more hours, and exercised regularly. I wish I had made better decisions about what to eat or drink — at times I consumed more soda and energy drinks than water. I wish I had made more time for other experiences that helped me grow incredibly quickly once I gave them a chance. You might think: but if you had prioritized those things, wouldn’t your contributions have been...
