Amazon Opens Cashier less Grocery Store in Seattle

Amazon, an online eCommerce platform is opening its first cashier-less supermarket, the latest sign that Amazon is serious about shaking up the $800 billion grocery industry. Amazon on Tuesday opens up its new store in Seattle, where shoppers can grab milk or eggs and walk out without checking out or opening their wallets. Shoppers scan a smartphone app to enter the store. Cameras and sensors track what's taken off shelves. Items are charged to an Amazon account after leaving. Schoner will join Standard in a consulting capacity, to help manage the integration of DeepMagic’s technology into Standard’s platform. SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., July 25, 2019-- Standard Cognition, which is building the next interface of retail, announced today that it has raised a $35M Series B funding round led by the EQT Ventures fund (“EQT Ventures”) with participation from existing investors Initialized Capital, CRV and Y Combinator. This brings Standard’s total funding to date to more than $86M, and its post-money valuation to $535M more than a 2x increase since the company raised its Series A in Nov 2018. The retail giant Amazon has made aggressive plans of launching as many as 3,000 new Amazon Go cashierless stores in the next few years. The people familiar with the development stated that the company plans to open 10 such stores by the end of this year. These stores will further be expanded to 50 locations across major metro areas by 2019 and as many as 3,000 stores by 2021.
