Delhi Govt Puts on Hold Bike-Taxi and Rent-a-Bike Schemes

The city government has put on hold its bike-taxi and rent-a-bike schemes after authorities in Gurgaon and Bengaluru launched a crackdown over rampant violations in their operations. The AAP government had in February last year approved the rent-a-bike scheme but not notified it. It was aimed at providing last mile connectivity to tourists and individual in the city. The Bike-taxi scheme was, however, under consideration. "In Gurgaon and Benguluru, operators of rent-a-bike and bike-taxi schemes were running private vehicles which is in violation of rules. Only commercial vehicles are allowed under the scheme," said a senior official. The official said that in view of this, the transport department will study the scheme and then come out with a final notification. "We have put on...

Odd-Even: Delhi Govt. Warning to App-Based Taxis For Overcharging

The Delhi government today said app-based taxi operators will be restrained from levying peak time charges when the second round of the odd-even scheme will be in force. The scheme aims at cutting down on the number of vehicles plying on the citys roads. Taxis have been exempted under the road-rationing plan and are in demand when it is in force. "Action will be taken if we receive complaints of app-based taxis charging exorbitant fares when the scheme is in force," Delhi Transport Minister Gopal Rai warned. "Commercial vehicles bearing yellow number plates, including CNG-run taxis, three-wheeler and four-wheeler tempos, autos and taxis will be allowed to ply under the scheme," said a senior government official. The official said that commercial vehicles of other states running...

AAP Govt Announces Rs 2Cr. Funding For Startups To Clear Delhi’s Air Pollution

On November 27th, one of the US Embassy's pollution-monitoring stations in New Delhi recorded a chart-breaking reading of 999 on its custom-developed Air Quality Index. To put that in perspective, any reading above 150 is considered unhealthy, with the range 351-500 classified as 'hazardous'. Delhi city surprisingly overtook Tokyo in terms of population; data suggests that the number has gone up to 25 million in 2014–doubled since 1990, says a report compiled by the UN. The hazardous air underscores the challenge facing the government as it battles pollution caused by the coal-burning power industry and will raise questions about its ability to clean up its economy at the talks in Paris. The recent move came after Delhi’s pollution levels were declared ‘hazardous’, as the US embas...
