But do you also know that there is an on demand marketplace which connects travelers with local people from whom they could experience the cultures on its nature.
Visit Padhaaro an on-demand marketplace to connect travelers with locals and help them discover local experiences. Padhaaro was started off in October 2013 and the first 6-8 months went in researching the whole domain, building a strong community of greeters/experience providers and launching the product. From last 6 months Padhaaro generates steady revenues and also local persons living in Heritage cities are also earning good amount with the help of Padhaaro.
Interesting story behind the Padhaaro origination:
The idea originated when I was traveling in Moscow after attending a youth forum and couldn’t figure out what to do and how to explore the city really well. And what’s better than having a knowledgable local who knows the city and has expertise to deliver the right experience.
The thought developed once I came back and realized that it would be amazing to have an interface where I could find interesting things(facilitated by locals) to do in town, explore them based on my interests and go ahead and book them right away. This is how the journey started to present where we have catered to more than 1000 travelers till now and have a presence in around 18 cities in India.
Domain & Services
We are in the “things-to-do” domain which is the most crucial step in a traveler’s cycle – after you are done with the trip, you don’t generally remember the flight you took or the hotel you stayed in but you definitely remember what all you did in the destination.
For instance, if you are in Delhi and wish to explore Chandni Chowk, there are two ways to experience the place:
1) Either get pulled along by the coursing crowd.
2) Find out what’s really hidden in its maze of alleyways with a greeter (local person).
In spite of being the single most defining aspect of travel, this segment is completely fragmented and unexplored. And we are trying to build a product which provides you a seamless discovery and booking process for local experiences and activities that cater to your interest set.
About the founder & Team of Pahaaro
Ish, the founder, is a graduate of NIT Warangal and has worked with a management consulting firm before starting Padhaaro. We are a team of 4 members taking care of product, content, operations and marketing. .He looks after product, operations and marketing.
There is no hierarchy since we have a pretty lean structure and everyone knows what needs to be done and how it has to be executed the right way.
Revenue model &Funding status
The revenue model is pretty straight forward – we take a certain cut on every experience booked. We raised an initial money through the Morpheus and are currently looking to raise further investment.
Challenges & Competitors in the market
There are a number of players in this space. However, I feel that our real competitors are the hotel concierge and tour brochures. Most of the discovery for tours and local experiences still happens offline and that is going to change considerably in the times to come. Otherwise our competitors include peek, vayable and with locals.
Visualization and plans for next few years
Our focus is on expansion and building a pretty neat product right now – atleast for the next few months. If we talk about the larger vision, it’s about making the discovery and booking of travel experiences as awesome as possible. Moreover, we want to make every traveler have a very localized experience.
Strategies for increasing customer base
Simple strategy to customer acquisition is to keep on working on the product and improvising it so as to have something that every traveler would love to use. We also have B2B partnerships and good content to increase the user base.
