When was the last time you got a reward for learning for your own sake? In the school, right? But what if I tell you that there is a place where you can learn and earn both and that too free of cost? Yes, that’s Freedu.in, a Gamified GATE and Placement Preparation website.
Freedu is an online venture by the alumni of IIT Jodhpur to help the students get premium quality education without paying even a single penny from their pocket. Financially supported by the Government of Rajasthan, Freedu is incubated at the Innovation and Incubation Centre IIT Jodhpur, Rajasthan.
“Belonging to a middle class family, we had a little steep chase with respect to modern luxuries, like going to Mcd and other restaurants before coming to IIT. Having an aspiration to do something in education industry, we started analyzing the education system and its culture amongst various technical institutions and results were shocking, we realized that the whole nation is charging money and saying we will give you skills and certificate that companies will value, but the truth is almost 90% of the CV of Tier II or Tier III colleges look alike” says Ankit Saraswat Co-founder and a 2012 mechanical batch IIT-J alumni.
“We realized that there is a lot of work required to fill this gap between judgments of bad, good and outstanding by the companies. We decided that though we can work on the idea of providing quality education, but it has to be free of cost unless companies start valuing our content and assessment procedure. As money is the most necessary element required to keep your idea, your vision of developing something alive, we started analyzing various models and there struck the concept of Freecharge and it got us fascinated because of their concept of giving something equal worth back to the consumer. Also, we found that its actually young generation who want to enjoy different brands and always look ways to save money. Thus, coupons are the perfect ways to motivate them to study for initial lessons. When they starts understanding a lesson, self-motivation leads to the completion of remaining exercises. ” He adds.
Talking about the USP, Ankit adds “While others charge money, we are trying hard to enhance the ways of education for free, that too filled with interactive methods, which results in distribution of freebies for learning.”
Lets have a look at the menu:
Whats on the desk:
Started by Ankit Saraswat, Vinod Kumar Meena in year 2013 and Later on joined by the Pawan Meena, this hardworking team strive daily in the field of education by innovating new approaches that redefine the traditional ways of education. Currently not focusing on the money part, Freedu is aiming at giving quality practice material for GATE exam preparation or campus placement training material to final and pre-final year engineering students, supported by in-depth analysis of student’s performance via a very beautiful user interface. For improvement in weaker areas, students even get there fully graphically analysed profiles too.
How it works:
In order to get Freedu in a proper shape, team traveled to IIT Madras, NPTEL office. It took some hardcore efforts of two months to get all NPTEL video course database right from the source. Instead of downloading the material from internet, Freedu opted for better association because of their belief in “Stronger the association between course creator and student, better would be the outcome.”
“We had many challenges while developing Freedu. The biggest one was to arrange money, although we won 10 Lac grant from Gov. of Rajasthan, yet it has not been channelized to us via proper mechanism, making situations really difficult at ground level. Then it was difficult to convince brands to give coupons to our users. Getting the first coupon took us over a month, but after than getting next five took less than a month.” recalls Ankit.
Because of Content quality and User Interface being extremely good, Freedu gets over 50 wonderful registrations every day via words of mouth. Things are slowly getting better now and catching up the pace. Further future targets include scaling up the user base of around 200 people per day with premium quality material
