With the increasing growth and competition among the taxi cab services online, Uber in India has introduced its less data consuming app known as ‘Uber Lite’. The app has been made in India but can be used by any Uber user across the globe.
The app launches first in India and then in other parts of the world. The regular Uber app is 181.4MB in size whereas Uber Lite app is less than 5 MB. ‘Uber Lite’ is basically the compact version of Uber app. The smaller app saves space as well as the data consumption is also low. Besides, the app also functions well in low connectivity areas. The announcement of the newly built app was made in New Delhi at the Uber’s Tech Day 2.0 on Tuesday.
#UberLite is arriving soon: Peter Deng (Head of Rider Product) and Manik Gupta (VP & Head of Product) unveiled the new, space-saving app that works in any network condition.

Uber Lite has a minimal design to keep it running quickly and smoothly. The app also learns from your regular riding habits, figuring out where you go most often, in order to lower down the typing time and save time as well. Apart from that, even if you are offline, the app guesses the user’s destination based on popular places in the city. Maps that show in the regular Uber app do not appear in the lighter version by default unless tapped on the option when the user needs it.
PLUS POINTS OF UBER LITE:
1) Uber Lite app works much quicker and easier with a 300-millisecond response time.
2) The app helps to minimize storage consumption, typing efforts as well as is less time-consuming.
3) The app works even in low connectivity areas along with faster booking process.
4) Even if the user is offline, the app suggests the popular locations of the city that the user may choose.
5) If the app can’t detect user’s location because of GPS or network problems, it guides them to choose popular landmarks nearby.
Manik Gupta, VP and head of product in Uber said, “We have over 75 Mn monthly active riders, which is a tiny fraction of the world’s population. With such a huge growth opportunity outside of the US, we are committed to building for the next hundreds of millions of riders. To better serve them, we are doubling down on building and designing products entirely in India — Uber Lite is our biggest launch yet on this journey.”
The launch of Uber Lite app comes after five months of the launch of Ola’s lite app known as ‘Ola Lite’. The latter’s app which was introduced in January this year is only 1MB in size and is also being used by many people now for easier and faster cab booking. The launch of the Uber Lite now will attract more and more people to download the small sized app and make use of it more often. However, it might be interesting to see which cab service wins the race.
