Twitter Suspends 70 Million Fake Accounts in Two Months

Leading Microblogging website Twitter Inc. suspended over 70 million fake accounts in two months (May and June), as per the latest report revealed by the Twitter sources to The Washington Post.

In the report of the Washington post, Twitter said that they are running a massive clean-up drive to clear out bots and trolls on the platform.

The impact of this campaign is that the rate of suspension of accounts is doubled since October.

Over 1 million accounts were suspended a day in recent months. Twitter is now on image makeover campaign, clearing all the fake and spam accounts on its website.

The most popular blogging site between celebrities is looking to stop spam and abuse of fake accounts. However, these aggressive measures against unwanted accounts may impact the Twitter user base as a fall in the number of monthly users.

The US Congress came on heavily on social media sites after the 2016 United States presidential election and criticised Twitter and Facebook for promoting fake accounts to spread false information to impact US domestic politics.

Del Harvey, Vice President of Trust and Safety of Twitter, said in an official blog post in June, “Focusing on improving the health of conversations on Twitter means ensuring people have access to credible, relevant, and high-quality information on Twitter”.
