The budget carriers Air India Express and IndiGo (InterGlobe Aviation Ltd) have made it to the top five cheapest airlines in the world in providing international connectivity.
This seems to be an achievement for the country, where the wholly-owned subsidiary of state-run carrier Air India Express has been ranked second whereas the low-cost carrier IndiGo has been placed at the fifth position by the Global Flight Pricing Report prepared by Melbourne-based multimodal travel planning site called Rome2rio. In addition to this, the Jet Airways and Air India have also been placed at the 12th and 13th rank respectively by the report.
The Global Flight Pricing Report compared 200 major airlines across the globe to reach the conclusion on the basis of average price per kilometer. The airline that stands first in this regard is Asia X. According to the report, which has been released this month only, four out of five airlines are from Asia. The other two airlines on the list are Indonesia Air Asia and Primera Air.
Talking about India’s airlines, Air India Express (which mostly connects Gulf countries and Singapore) has an average cost of $0.08 per km, while IndiGo’s (which connects Indian cities with Gulf countries besides Bangkok, Colombo and Kathmandu) average is $0.10 per km for international flights.
While analyzing the data economy class airfares displayed during the first two months of this year, totaling some 1.5 million price points were taken into consideration. None of the airlines from the UK or US could make it to the top 10 cheapest airlines in the global list and this, on the other hand, seems to be a big achievement for the country.
