Google to Acquire IOT Platform for $50 million

Google announced in a blog-post that it has agreed into agreements to acquire Xively, a division of LogMeIn Inc for $50 million through which, its  Cloud IOT Core will gain deep IOT technology and engineering expertise, including Xively’s advanced device management, messaging, and dashboard capabilities.

Google believes that the growing IOT market can reach as much as 20 billion connected things by 2020. This acquisition of Xively will help the search engine giant to enable device designers to build connectivity directly into the design process while providing a cloud-mobile connection between the end user app and the connected device.

“With the addition of Xively’s robust, enterprise-ready IoT platform, we can accelerate our customers’ timeline from IoT vision to product, as they look to build their connected business,” writes Antony Passemard, Product Management, IoT and Pub/Sub, Google Cloud.

“Our customers will benefit from Xively’s extensive feature set and flexible device management platform, paired with the security and scale of Google Cloud. With Google Cloud’s deep leadership in data analytics and machine learning, our customers will also be uniquely positioned to build turnkey IoT solutions and focus on business value creation,” the blog reads.

LogMeIn also acknowledged the deal in its blog-post telling about its intent to sell Xively business to Google. LogMeIn will be taking an exit from IOT domain, and focus on its three largest opportunities- Customer Engagement, Unified Communications & Collaboration (UCC), and Identity and Access Management (IAM), to expand customer value.

“We believe that Google Cloud, now armed with Xively’s team and great technology – and backed by their platform and developer heritage and reach – are a far better fit for the future of platform leadership.  What we will continue to do is invest in our Support-of-Things initiatives for products like LogMeIn Rescue, Bold360, GoToAssist, Central, Rescue Lens and SeeIt – all offerings that will continue to help our customers support new types of connected products, as well as the connected consumers that use them.” Bill Wagner from LogMeIn wrote in the post.

The company also acquired Jive Communications recently that will help them in strenghtening its services. “Last week, we announced a deal to acquire Jive Communications – a deal that will bring together LogMeIn’s renowned portfolio of collaboration apps like GoToMeeting and join.me with one of the best cloud telephony services on the market.”
