Facebook to combine AR, VR and News Feed with 3D Posts

Facebook users should gear up for some stimulating news. The Facebook Inc.’s Andrew Bosworth, head of virtual and augmented reality products and hardware, announced that the social media company will make its “biggest AR/VR news” to date at the upcoming Facebook Developer (F8)  Conference in May.

Facebook has been consistent in coming up with new features such as 360 photos, Live videos and GIFs which have helped them in keeping the users mainly the youth interested, and now it is polishing its standard to a new level. Last year, in October Facebook debuted with posts of 3D Models in News Feed that you can play with by moving and spinning it.

Facebook 3D posts will support and allow textures, lighting and realistic furnishing of rough or shiny objects. The developers have been able to build such 3D modelling apps with the help of new Graph API endpoints.

With this new feature that will be soon available in the near future, users can drag and drop 3D objects into the feed.

Revealing some details about the feature Facebook’s creative director for social VR, Ocean Quigley says,

“We’re trying to make 3D a native part of the Facebook ecosystem. Stage 3 is getting these 3D objects into AR. We’re trying to lay the foundational steps so Facebook can go with users into their 3D worlds of VR and AR.”

He further hopes to keep the “the upload flow pretty simple and streamlined.”

However, the news certainly fails to provide an experience until the launch of the feature finally happens.
