Oppo Planning to Launch Sub Brand to Take Over Xiaomi in India

Chinese Smartphone Manufacturer Oppo has begun assembling printed circuit boards (PCB's) at its maiden second plant in India and is also planning to launch a sub-brand aimed at taking over arch contender Xiaomi, which is currently the leading player in the Indian market. Will Take Action If India Shields Its Local Mobile Phone Makers: Chinese media

India should resist the temptation of resorting to "protectionism" to shield local mobile phone makers against Chinese smartphone firms, China's official media said on Tuesday warning that Beijing could take countermeasures against any such move. Chinese handset maker Xiaomi today said it plans to ramp up its offline distribution channel in the country and is targeting around 50 per cent of its turnover from this segment. “Till now, our focus was on online sales. Now, we will focus both on online and offline distribution. We expect our share from offline to grow from current 10 per cent to 50 per cent by the end of this year. Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi today rolled out its first laptop, testing the waters in a market that has been flooded with premium tablets. The laptop Mi Notebook Air, runs on Microsofts Windows 10 operating system, sells for 4,999 yuan (around  USD 749) for a 13.3-inch display. A slimmed-down version for office use is also available for 3,499 yuan. The laptop is priced at a discount compared to many models with similar specifications from leading brands such as Lenovo, Dell, HP and Apple. Chinese Smartphone Xiomi Do Not Want Exemption From Sourcing Norm Like Apple

Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi today said it is not seeking exemption from Indian government to fulfil the 30 per cent local sourcing norm, as it already makes 75 per cent of devices locally that are sold in India. "We are manufacturing 75 per cent of devices that we sell in India locally. From that perspective, we dont need any kind of exemption. Our application is still under the purview of the government. We probably will be able to know about it in some time and then share more details," Xiaomi India Head Manu Kumar Jain said.
