China Closes More Than 13,000 Websites In Past Three Years

China has closed more than 13,000 websites since the beginning of 2015 for breaking the law or other rules and the vast majority of people support government efforts to clean up cyberspace, state news agency Xinhua said on Sunday. The government has stepped up already tight controls over the internet since President Xi Jinping took power five years ago, in what critics say is an effort to restrict freedom of speech and prevent criticism of the ruling Communist Party. The government says all countries regulate the internet, and its rules are aimed at ensuring national security and social stability and preventing the spread of pornography and violent content. A report to the on-going session of the standing committee of China’s largely rubber stamp parliament said the authorities ha...

News, Sports Websites Vulnerable to Cyber Attacks: Study

News and sports websites have some of the lowest levels of security adoption, making them vulnerable to cyber attacks, a new study has found. Researchers looked at the security protocols used by the top 500 sites in various industries and online sectors. They found that fewer than 10 per cent of news and sports websites used basic security protocols such as Transport Layer Security (TLS). Even those that do are not always using the "latest or strongest protocols", researchers said. "It is like news and sport content providers do not value the security of their content," said Professor Alan Woodward, a cyber-security expert at the University of Surrey in the UK. "They are leaving themselves vulnerable to attacks like cross-site scripting, where an attacker can pretend somethi...

Indian Govt. Banned 240 Websites Offering Escort Services

Government has banned 240 websites offering escort services on the recommendation of an expert committee under the Ministry of Home Affairs. "The order to block 240 escorts websites was issued to internet service providers on Monday on recommendations made by an expert committee under the Ministry of Home Affairs," an IT Ministry official said. He said that as per the process, complaints or representations are made by aggrieved persons or party before the expert committee, which then takes a call on it.  However, industry sources criticised the move, calling it directionless. "Content of all the websites cannot be blocked. The order has been issued without going into technical nitty gritty around it. If a website changes the name or link slightly, it will again start working," said an e...
