One-Third of Smartphone Notifications Worsen Our Mood: Study

Over one third of the notifications on smartphones worsen our moods, triggering us to feel hostile, upset, nervous, afraid or ashamed, a study has found. Researchers at the Nottingham Trent University in the UK studied the effect on mood in 50 participants who received thousands of digital alerts over a five-week period. Out of more than half a million notifications, they found that 32 per cent resulted in negative emotions. Notifications relating to non-human activity - such as general phone updates and wifi availability "had the worst impact on phone users" mood, researchers found. New Tech Can Turn Any Object into TV Remote

Cant find your TV remote again? Scientists have developed a technology that can turn everyday objects - such as teacups or toy cars - into remote controls for televisions. Researchers from Lancaster University in the UK show a novel technique that allows body movement, or movement of objects, to be used to interact with screens. The Matchpoint technology, which only requires a simple webcam, works by displaying moving targets that orbit a small circular widget in the corner of the screen. These targets correspond to different functions - such as volume, changing channel or viewing a menu. The user synchronises the direction of movement of the target, with their hand, head or an object, to achieve what researchers call spontaneous spatial coupling, which activates the desired funct...

Now Charge Your Phone Simply By Walking And Waving At Your Friends

Scientists, including one of Indian origin, have developed an ultra-thin device that can power your smartphone, fitness tracker and other gadgets using human movements such as walking and waving. Based on battery technology and made from layers of black phosphorus that are only a few atoms thick, the energy harvesting system generates small amounts of electricity when it is bent or pressed even at the extremely low frequencies characteristic of human motion. "In the future, I expect that we will all become charging depots for our personal devices by pulling energy directly from our motions and the environment," said Cary Pint, assistant professor at Vanderbilt University in the US. Compared to the other approaches designed to harvest energy from human motion, the new method has two fu...

Nokia’s Mobile Networks Head Quits, to Split Business

Nokia's head of mobile networks, the division which accounted for more than half of the Finnish telecom network equipment maker's sales last year, is leaving the company. Nokia said on Friday it would break out services as a distinct business group from mobile networks following the departure of Samih Elhage, who joined the company in 2012 and helped to turn around its network business at a time when it was a troubled joint venture with Siemens. Services were growing in importance because of the weak global outlook, Nokia said. The global networks market is expected to fall this year as telecom operators' demand for faster 4G mobile broadband equipment has peaked, and upgrades to next-generation 5G equipment are still years away. "He has been a close friend and advisor... I fully su...
