Retail Workers Feel Disruption From Shifting Shopper Habits

AP, NEW YORK - With new options and conveniences, there's never been a better time for shoppers. As for workers.. well, not always. The retail industry is being radically reshaped by technology, and nobody feels that disruption more starkly than 16 million American shelf stockers, salespeople, cashiers and others. The shifts are driven, like much in retail, by the Amazon effect - the explosion of online shopping and the related changes in consumer behavior and preferences. As mundane tasks like checkout and inventory are automated, employees are trying to deliver the kind of customer service the internet can't match. So a Best Buy employee who used to sell electronics in the store is dispatched to customers' homes to help them choose just the right products. A Walmart worker dashes in a...

Instagram to Test New Shopping Feature To Buy Products From Retailers

Facebook Inc's Instagram said that it will start tests next week on a new shopping feature through which users can buy products from US-based retailers via the photo-sharing app. Retailers will be able to showcase up to five products in a Instagram post, and clicking on the various tags will give users a lot more detail about the product than was previously available, Instagram said in a blog post on Tuesday. Instagram has also added a "shop now" link on each product, which, when clicked, will redirect users to the retailer's website where they can buy the product. The new features are aimed at keeping Instagram users, who now number more than 500 million, on the app for longer during their shopping experience than before, when they would have to exit the app to research and bu...

Retailers Earn More From Online Than Offline Sales: Study

Retailers offering customers an option to buy products online earn more revenue than those who only sell their goods offline, according to a new study. The study suggests that customers spend more online because it is easier to locate items through the search function. Junzhao Ma, a lecturer at Monash University in Australia studied how a larger selection of products available online affects consumer spending, using data from a large US retailer that specialises in apparel and offers both printed catalogue and internet shopping. In particular, he examined the effect on the retailer's main products, offered in the catalogues and for which there was high demand and the less-popular niche items that were available on the retailer's website but hard to find in its catalogues. Ma found ...

Decoding: The Growing Role Of Data In Sponsorship

The Audience remains at the heart of the sponsorship proposition. However, it is no longer exposure, impressions generated or image transfer that drives and determines value. Rather—thanks to data—it is the ability to engage, involve and connect with fans that raises sports, events, entertainment, nonprofit, cultural, association and other partnerships above mere marketing. This is not a recent change; at least not on one side of the fence. Data-led, digitally enabled personalization has been at the heart of many brand marketing initiatives since the turn of the century. More recently, as the technology cost of delivering personalization has been reduced, rightsholders in some areas of entertainment—cinema, for example—have begun to take the initiative in this space. Most others, howeve...

Startup Born At TED, Now Covering 1 billion Consumer Products

Commerce is becoming pervasive – every interaction with a consumer is an opportunity to inform, educate, and sell products. In order to become Product-Aware (as businesses today are location-aware) businesses are going to need reliable and comprehensive product information for making informed decisions. Product awareness is nothing but, a state where every app and website has access to comprehensive product data in real time that will help them serve their customers in a better way. After spending two decades in the US at the Microsoft Corp headquartered at Redmond, Sanjay thought about building his own venture in India. Sanjay was at the TED conference in Oxford, England when the thought of starting a “product related data analytics company” struck him. The idea of building algorithms t...

If You’re Not Buying What You’re Selling, You’re in Big Trouble- John Brubaker

Outdoor and fitness goods retail chain REI recently made an announcement that it would be closing stores on Black Friday. You should do the same. I’m not talking about closing your store. What I’m referring to is believing so strongly in what you do that you actually live it. While many believe that REI closing all 76 of its stores on Black Friday may be a lost revenue opportunity, I would say that REI's OptOutside initiative shows the world how fearlessly unapologetic and authentic the company is. This move will create new customers, cement more intense loyalty among existing customers and just may spark a crusade to reel in some of the insanity that is Black Friday shopping. This all begs the question: Do you practice what you preach? The other day a colleague asked me, "What is th...
