Tax-free income for salaried class and pensioners has been raised to Rs 2.9 lakh by way of a Rs 40,000 standard deduction and not by hiking exemption limit as the government wanted the benefit to accrue to honest tax payers, Finance Secretary Hasmukh Adhia said today. The standard deduction, which replaces tax-free transport allowance of Rs 1,600 per month (Rs 19,200 a year) and medical expense reimbursement of Rs 15,000 per annum, will accrue automatically to salaried class and pensioners without the requirement of furnishing proof like medical bills that is in vogue now. The provision, which forms part of the Budget for 2018- 19, will apply from April 1 after Parliament approval. India sees growth rebound as businesses adjust to GST

India’s economic growth rebounded in the three months ending in September, halting a five-quarter slide as businesses started to overcome teething troubles after the bumpy launch of a national sales tax. Data released on Thursday showing faster growth could help Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has been facing criticism over the hasty July launch of a goods and services tax (GST). The tax was aimed at transforming India’s 29 states into a single customs union but it has hit millions of small businesses due to complex rules and technical glitches.  Gross domestic product grew 6.3 percent in July-September, its fastest pace in three quarters, compared with 7.5 percent a year earlier, the data showed. Analysts polled by Reuters had forecast annual growth of 6.4 percent in the q...

Nissan Sues India Over Outstanding Dues; Seeks Over $770M

Japanese automaker Nissan Motor has begun international arbitration against India to seek more than $770 million in a dispute over unpaid state incentives, according to a person familiar with the matter and documents reviewed by Reuters. In a legal notice sent to Prime Minister Narendra Modi last year, Nissan sought payment of incentives due from the Tamil Nadu government as part of a 2008 agreement to set up a car manufacturing plant in the southern state. According to the notice, Nissan said repeated requests to state officials for the payment, due in 2015, were overlooked and even a plea by the company’s chairman, Carlos Ghosn, to Modi in March of last year seeking federal assistance did not yield any results. The notice, sent by Nissan’s lawyers in July 2016, was followed by more th...

Moody’s Raised India’s Rating Based Mainly On UPA Govts Work: P Chidambaram

Former Union finance minister P Chidambaram today claimed that US credit rating agency Moody's upgraded India's ranking based mainly on the work done by the previous UPA government. Moody's had on Friday upgraded India's sovereign credit rating by a notch to Baa2 with a stable outlook, citing improved growth prospects driven by economic and institutional reforms. "The ranking improved not because what happened yesterday but it improved based on what happened over seven or eight years. "I am happy that Moody's has raised India's ranking ... A major contribution to it was made by the UPA government and the other part of the contribution was by the present government," he told reporters here. The senior Congress leader took a swipe at the government for writing a letter to Moody's fiv...

Smartphones Made in India? Manufacturing Ambition Hits Hurdles

India’s ambitions to become a smartphone-making powerhouse are foundering over a lack of skilled labour and part suppliers along with a complex tax regime, industry executives say. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has championed a manufacturing drive, under the slogan ‘Make in India’, to boost the sluggish economy and create millions of jobs. Among the headline-grabbing details was a plan to eventually make Apple iPhones in India. Three years on, as executives and bureaucrats crowded into a Delhi convention centre for an inaugural mobile congress last week, India has managed only to assemble phones from imported components. While contract manufacturers such as iPhone-maker Foxconn Technology Co and Flextronics Corp have set up base in India, one of the world’s fastest-growing smartpho...
