Snapchat Stock Falls as Alleged CEO Comments on India

Shares of Snap fell 1.5 percent as the Snapchat owner faced criticism for comments allegedly made by its CEO about not prioritising growth in India and Spain because they were "poor" countries. The dip put Snap on track to close at its lowest level in nearly a month, a bad sign following its $3.4 billion public listing that was the hottest by a technology company in three years. Twitter users using the #boycottsnapchat hashtag called for uninstalling the Snapchat app after a legal document unsealed last week alleged that Snap Chief Executive Evan Spiegel in 2015 said he was uninterested in prioritising growth in India and Spain because they were "poor". The legal document filed in a Los Angeles state court concerns claims made in a lawsuit filed by an employee who left the company...

Snapchat App is For Everyone and We are “Grateful” To Have Indian users: Official

Snapchat today refuted the reported claims of a former employee who alleged that its CEO Evan Spiegel made negative comments about the Indian market, saying the multimedia mobile app is for everyone and the company is "grateful" to its Indian users. "Obviously Snapchat is for everyone! It's available worldwide to download for free," a spokesperson for Snapchat said in a statement to CNN. Snapchat is strongly denying allegations by a former employee Anthony Pompliano, who alleged in a lawsuit that Spiegel had once shot down his suggestion to pursue growth in certain international markets. Pompliano alleges that Spiegel said Snapchat is "only for rich people" and that he didn't want to "expand into poor countries like India and Spain. "Those words were written by a disgrunt...

Instagram Stories Overtakes Snapchat to Hit 200M Daily Active Users

Facebook-owned Instagram has claimed that more than 200 million people a day use its Stories feature, which competes against Snapchat. Snapchat had 161 million daily active users at the end of last year, ahead of Snap's March initial public offer, which was the largest by a technology firm in three years despite decelerating user growth. Instagram Stories' daily active users announced on Thursday has grown by 33% from the 150 million daily active users it had in January. The Instagram feature, which launched last year, lets users and businesses post a string of photos and videos that disappear after 24 hours, similar to Snapchat. Facebook last month introduced an update to allow users to tweak photos on their smartphones with visual details like a rainbow or a beard of glitter,...

Indian Finance Ministry Receives Over 38,000 Mails on Black Money Email id

The email address launched by the Finance Ministry for getting tips about black money received over 38,000 emails, but only 16 per cent of them were forwarded for further inquiry, CBDT said in a reply to an RTI query earlier this month. Jitendra Ghadge, a city-based Right To Information activist, had asked for information about response to the email address 'blackmoneyinfo@incometax.gov.in', launched last December. The Central Board of Direct Taxes said in its reply dated April 7 that 38,068 emails were received, and 6,050 or about 16 per cent of them were forwarded to the respective Director Generals Of Income Tax (Investigation) for further inquiry. The remaining 32,018 emails were closed without any action, it said. To Ghadge's query about number of "false" emails received, ...

Now Earn Rs 10 For Every Person You Refer to The BHIM App

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday suggested an easy way for youngsters to make a quick buck this summer vacation. He said for every person you introduce to the BHIM app, you will get a cash back of Rs 10. "If you refer a mere 20 people a day to the app, you can earn Rs 200," he said. Notably, the PM had recently expressed gratitude to the people saying over the last few months the country had witnessed an atmosphere in which people in large numbers participated in the digital payment, the 'Digidhan' movement. Pushing for a less-cash economy, PM Narendra Modi said the government's 'DigiDhan' movement for digital payment is a step towards curbing the menace of corruption. While paying rich tributes to Dr B R Ambedkar on his 126th birth anniversary at the Deekshabhoomi here, ...

Challenge for Startups to Get Series C & Beyond Funding: Kris Gopalakrishnan

Securing series C and beyond funding is a challenge for start-ups, Information Technology veteran Kris Gopalakrishnan said as he called for a simple, orderly and fast-track mechanism to shut failed businesses. The start-ups scenario in India is pretty good but when those firms go for series C and beyond funding, there are some challenges, the co-founder and former CEO of Infosys said. "But at the seed stage or series A (funding), there is still money available; good ideas will get funded and there are lot of opportunities for innovation and new startups in the area of financial services, healthcare, niche retail and deeper technologies, converting research into new products and new businesses," Gopalakrishnan told Pixr8 here. "So, there are significant opportunities still (to tap in t...

Under Pressure, India’s Snapdeal Woos Staff With Promises of Profit

Seeking to calm employees rattled by reports of a cash crunch, the founders of Indian online retailer Snapdeal have gone directly to them with a string of townhall meetings in past weeks, according to sources, promising profit and brushing off takeover talk. The sources, familiar with the group, declined to be named as the meetings were not public. Like most e-commerce players in India, Snapdeal is burning cash to sustain discounts - and keep customers - in a cut-throat online market. But as the number three player, it also is under growing pressure from investors and its own employees to consider its bottom line, as well as market share. One of the sources said there had been at least five townhalls in recent weeks, with founders Kunal Bahl and Rohit Bansal delivering motivationa...
