Online Companies are Focusing on Unit Economics, Customers: Report

E-Retailers Focusing on turning unit economics positive and customer retention as opposed to the prior focus on gross merchandise value, a recent report said. "We believe this may be a function of limited availability of capital, leading companies to focus on cash generation. Post government regulations that curtailed discounts, companies seem to have done away with the same; most discounts being seen online are being offered by sellers or brands themselves," a study by Kotak Institutional Equities said. Gross merchandise value is the total sales value of goods sold through a marketplace. Most companies surveyed are also evaluating other revenue streams such as advertising and online content to better leverage their platform, it added. Customer retention, recall and loy...

Indian Chai Stirred Into Silicon Valley Coffee Culture

San Francisco (AFP) - In a Silicon Valley culture known for brilliant ideas boiling up in coffee shops, Gaurav Chawla is pouring his heart into chai. Chawla was on a break from his job as an engineering manager at San Francisco-based cloud-computing star Salesforce when he began lamenting how tough it was to find a cup of chai as good as he makes it at home. That frustration, and echoed complaints by other natives of India, where the blend of spiced tea and simmered milk is woven into daily lifestyles, prompted him to start tinkering. "I took a rice cooker apart and reconfigured it to make chai," Chawla told AFP. "It made good chai, and I realized this process could be automated." While his background is in software engineering, Chawla went to work developing a chai machine as ...

Indian Companies To Pay $4,000 More For H-1B Visa Fee

Flagship Indian IT companies would have to pay at least an additional USD 4,000 for every H-1B visa application under the new regulations that came into effect last December, according to details published on Friday by a federal US agency. And those applying for L-1 visa petitions would have to pay USD 4,500 more than other US companies under the new law, which would be in effect till September 30, 2025. The H-1B visa is designed to allow US employers to recruit and employ foreign professionals in speciality occupations within the US while L-1 visas are available to employees of an international company with offices in both the US and abroad. Indian IT firms - which have to incur an additional burden of about USD 400 million annually - have called it "discriminatory", with Prime M...

Interactive Screens: The Future of Packaging

What if you could interact with your package's label, instead of reading it? A team of scientists has developed a new way of attaching electronic screens to paper-based packaging that will be able to display simple messages to the customers. The University of Sheffield scientists collaborated with technology company Novalia to create a new way of displaying information on packaging, a move that could revolutionise the packaging industry. This technology could be used in greetings cards or products where a customer could receive a simple message. More complex developments could include a countdown timer on the side of a packet to indicate when a timed product was ready, such as hair-dye, pregnancy tests or home-baking using a 'traffic lights' system. The team explained how a screen...

Yahoo Inc Officially Launched The Sale of Its Core Business

Yahoo Inc officially launched the sale of its core business on Friday, a move seen as a positive step for frustrated investors but not enough to keep an activist hedge fund from pursuing a proxy fight against the struggling Internet company. Yahoo shares jumped after the company announced its board has formed a committee of independent directors to explore strategic alternatives, and that it has hired investment banks and a law firm to run the process. The launch of the auction process, a move activist hedge fund Starboard Value and other shareholders have pushed since late last year, showed the company was moving another step closer to selling its core business, which includes search, mail and news sites, rather than spin it off as previously planned. The move follows more than t...

Don’t Forget Your Failures

There is a lot of emphasis on succeeding. And whether we buy the hype or not, we all want to succeed, especially if you consider success as "it works out the way I want it to." You know it feels good in the gut and in the heart because it worked out. So failing by that definition is that it didn’t work out the way you wanted it to. And [failing] is what we don’t usually get a lot of preparation for. She's right. But there's this, too: Failure is far from the only thing that entrepreneurs and business leaders don't get a lot of preparation for. When you're running a venture at breakneck speed, it's hard to pause even for a few hours or a few days, let alone reflect on what's happened in the recent past—for good or ill. And while most of us know that looking blindly toward the future with...
