Facebook To Notify Users When Photos Of Them Are Uploaded

Facebook Inc said on Tuesday it would begin using facial recognition technology to tell people on the social network when others upload photos of them, if they agree to let the company keep a facial template on file. The company said in a statement that it was making the feature optional to allow people to protect their privacy, but that it thought some people would want to be notified of pictures they might not otherwise know about.  The feature would not immediately be available in Canada and the European Union, Facebook said. Privacy laws are generally stricter in those jurisdictions, though the company said it was hopeful about implementing the feature there in the future.  Tech companies are putting in place a variety of functions using facial recognition technology, despit...

Apple In Talks To Acquire Music Identification App Shazam – Source

Apple Inc is in talks to acquire Shazam Entertainment Ltd, whose software helps users identify songs by pointing their phone at an audio source, according to a person familiar with the situation. Shazam’s smartphone app is already tightly integrated with Apple’s Siri digital assistant. Users of Apple’s iPhone with the Shazam app installed can say: “Hey Siri, what’s that song?” and the app will identify it. But Shazam has other features, such as the ability to identify television shows, that do not yet work with Siri. Tech news website TechCrunch reported the talks earlier, writing that Apple could pay about $400 million for Shazam and that a deal could be signed as early as next week. Shazam did not respond to a request for comment. Privately-held, UK-based Shazam has raised $1...

Apple To Pay $15B To Ireland In Back Taxes

American multinational tech giant company Apple Inc has agreed to pay over $15 billion to Ireland in back taxes in 2018. Apple and Ireland agreed to the terms of an escrow fund for the money, said Irish Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe, according to the source Wall Street Journal. The EU had earlier launched a fresh crackdown back in 2016 over taxes paid by the iPhone manufacturer. The EU said it planned to refer Ireland to the European Court of Justice for failing to recover the money in back taxes from Apple. The tax deal had allowed Apple to pay almost nothing as taxes on its European profits between 2003 and 2014, said European Union. It also said that Apple's Irish tax benefits were illegal, enabling the firm to pay a corporate tax rate of no more than one percent. Ireland...

Apple’s Tim Cook Says Developers Have Earned $17B From China App Store

Apple Inc’s chief executive Tim Cook said developers using its platform in China number 1.8 million and have earned a total 112 billion yuan ($16.93 billion), representing roughly a quarter of total global App Store earnings. Cook shared the data on Sunday during a speech at China’s top public cyber policy forum, organised by the Cybersecurity Administration of China (CAC), which oversees internet regulation including censorship. Earlier this year, Apple said that developers had earned roughly $70 billion in total revenue through the store. Apple is facing criticism from local users and rights groups for bowing to pressure from Beijing cyber regulators after it decided to remove hundreds of apps from its Chinese store this year, including messaging apps and virtual private network (VPN)...

Bargaining Chip? China Seen Closely Scrutinising Qualcomm, Broadcom Deal

A potential mega-merger between chipmaker Broadcom Ltd and U.S. rival Qualcomm Inc is likely to face stern scrutiny in China, antitrust lawyers say, amid a strategic push by Beijing into semiconductors. Broadcom made an unsolicited $103 billion bid for Qualcomm on Monday, aimed at creating a $200-billion-plus behemoth that could reshape the industry at the heart of mobile phone hardware. But Chinese regulatory approval could be a hold-up. Beijing and Washington have sparred over technology deals, including in chips, with the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) knocking back a number of takeovers involving Chinese firms this year. The thorny topic is likely to come up when U.S. President Donald Trump visits China this week - with Qualcomm executives in tow....

Qualcomm Sues Apple For Breach of Software License Contract

Qualcomm Inc has sued Apple Inc, alleging that it violated a software license contract to benefit rival chipmaker Intel Corp for making broadband modems, the latest salvo in the longstanding dispute between Qualcomm and Apple. Qualcomm said in a lawsuit filed in California state court in San Diego on Wednesday that Apple used its commercial leverage to demand unprecedented access to the chipmaker’s highly confidential software, including source code. Apple declined to comment on the suit. The company started using Intel’s broadband modem chips in the iPhone 7. In its complaint, Qualcomm alleged that Apple was required under its contract to ensure that Apple engineers working with Qualcomm did not communicate details about Qualcomm chips to Apple engineers working on competing chip...

Apple Hit With Trademark Lawsuit Over iPhone X “Animoji” Feature

Starting out with his conversation and speaking to an audience of students and to be entrepreneurs at the opening of the Foundry startup hub in Oxford, UK, Cook talked about his early life and what are the key elements to succeed as a CEO and as an entrepreneur. Back when Tim Cook was 21(1988), he says "I wanted to find a job that I loved and I wanted to love the work I did." Having grown up in a "very lower middle-class family" and watching his father working a "blue-collared job" for his family and not doing the thing he would love. The iPhone maker has always been willing to pay fair and reasonable rates for the patents it uses, Apple told Reuters in an email. “In many years of ongoing negotiations with Qualcomm, these patents have never been discussed and in fact were o...
